Cricket 1895

474 CR ICKET: A W E E K L Y RECORD OF THE GAME. D e c . 26, 1895 T h e C o u n t y C h a m p io n s h ip .— A D i f f i c u l t y . M r. W . E . D enison (N otts) said he had been asked to draw the attention o f the m eeting to a matter o f considerable im portance. U nder the present rule it was necessary for counties taking part in the first-class cham pionship to arrange hom e- and-hom e matches w ith not less than eight other leading counties. Ow in g to the visit o f the Australians some difficulty had arisen in one or tw o instances in arranging that num ber o f fixtures. It was suggested that the m eeting w ould perhaps like to propose to the M arylebone C lub that in a year in w hich the Austra lians visited this country the m inimum should be reduced from eight counties to six. I f this were n ot done, one or tw o counties, which were well qualified to p lay in first-class cricket, w ou ld be rele gated to the second rank. T he Chairman remarked that this was a m atter on which the secretaries were unable to decide. T hey had n o authority to alter the existing rule, which had been fram ed b y the M arylebone Club at the request o f the various coun ty comm ittees. I t was an im portant matter, and the proper course to take w as fo r the county comm ittees to represent to the M ary lebone Club that th ey desired the alteration, The M arylebone C lub w ould then consider the question and give a decision. In reply to an inquiry, it was stated that E ssex and Leicestershire had failed to arrange the necessary number o f matches. The feelin g o f the m eeting seemed favourable to M r. D enison’s suggestion, and the Chairman observed he w ou ld take it that the M arylebone C omm ittee m ight expect to hear from the counties on the su bject before their n ext m eeting on January 11. In reply to a question from D r. B encraft, the Chairman said he should rule that that m eeting was not qualified to propose an alteration o f the rule. There w ou ld be no objection, how ever, to the m eeting passing a resolution expressing approval o f the proposed reduction. E ventually M r. B oden (Derbyshire) proposed that M r. A lcock , as secretary of the leading county club, be requested to w rite to all county secretaries asking them to obtain the opinion o f their comm ittees, and comm unicate the same to the M ary lebone Comm ittee before their m eeting in January. D r. B encraft (H am pshire) seconded the m otion, rem arkirg that if the tw o counties named were excluded from the first-class the position o f other counties w ou ld al^o be affecled. Some o f them w ou ld then not have full programmes. The matches arranged ate as u n der: — APRIL. - 6 (E a sterM on d a y ). N ottin gh am , Nott«>Colts’ M atch 80.
