The three remaining dates will be :— N o /410.—THURSDAY, JAN. 30. No. 411.—THURSDAY, EEB. 27. No. 412.—THURSDAY, MARCH 28. JjJabtlton (Gossip. T h e abstract and brief ch ron icle o f the tim e.— Hamlet. A YEAR rarely closes for anyone w ith out disappointm ent or regrets. I n our case the last number o f Cricket brings w ith it occasion fo r deep regret in a severance o f ties w hich have been unbroken fo r some years. The pressure o f re sponsibilities of a higher kind have com pelled m y old friend and co-w orker, the R ev. R . S. H olm es to discontinue his contributions know n to cricketers all over the W orld, at all events for a time. T o say that “ Cricket N o tch e s” have been as fam iliar as household w ords to Cricket readers in all parts of the Em pire is n o exaggeration. H ow much they w ill be missed no one know s better than the w riter of P avilion G o ssip ; bu t his loss w ill be even still greater to those w h o have been responsible fo r the due appearance o f Cricket from its inception. M ethodical to a degree, aud conscientious in every way, his Notches, as I know w ell, repre sented a far greater amount o f work, hard honest w ork, involving a greater expenditure o f tim e and labour than the ordinary reader could imagine. H ow fu lly his heart was in his w ork, Cricket readers do not need to be told , fo r them as w ell as fo r those fo r w hom he has laboured, I can on ly offer our best thanks. O f the re-appearance o f N otches, if n ot as a standing dish, at all events as an occasional dish on the m enu o f Cricket I am con fident. - So after all, it is not to say g ood bye, au revoir then R ev. R . S. H . A s far as I can ju d ge, the on ly three benefit matches arranged for the season of 1896 are for G eorge L ohm ann of Surrey, R aw lin o f M iddlesex, and Sherwin o f N otts. L ohm ann had, before his de parture for South A frica, selected the Surrey and Y orkshire m atch at the O ral. The congestion consequent on the visit of the Australian team , how ever, is respon sible fo r the appearance o f that fixture on the days imm ediately preceding the A ugust Bank H olid ay. Sandwiched as it is betw een Surrey and Australians and the Bank H olid ay fixture at the Oval, I should fancy L ohm ann m ay be inclined to make another selection. R aw lin is to have the W hit M onday m atch (M iddlesex and Somersetshire) at L ord ’s. The Cam bridge University eleven w ill visit N ot tingham on June 8th to play N otts for Sherwin’s Benefit. T he election o f G. H . L ongm an to serve on the Comm ittee o f the Surrey County C.C. has brough t him again on to the same side at cricket as A . S. Tabor. There are hundreds o f Cricket readers to whom the records of L ongm an and Tabor in the E ton eleven and subsequently forC am bridge University are still fam iliar. Their great perform ance for Cam bridge against O xford at L ords, i n ------------ 1 have no books b y me as I write, and the year does n ot matter after all— w ill remain to the end as one o f the best displays o f batting in the history o f the In ter- University fixtures. A nyh ow , it is pleasant to find them again in close touch in the interests o f cricket. Surrey, too is to be congratulated on h aving them , both on its m anaging bod y. T he last mail from South A frica brings a brief account o f a very exceptional perform ance w ith ba t and ball, in which Sinclair, of Johannesburg, was the hero. In a m atch on the R an d on N ovem ber 23, against the Stray K lips, bu t for w hom is not stated, he took all the ten w ickets for 103. G oing in first for his side, subsequently w ith Louis Tancred, he went even one better. In less than an h ou r-an d-a-half, the pair are reported to have knocked the runs off. In any case, the report credits Sinclair with 157 and Tancred 93, both o f them not out. NEXT ISSUE, THURSDAY, JANUARY 30th.
