4 6 0 CR ICKET : A W E E K L Y RECORD OF THE GAME. N o v . 2 8 , 1 8 9 5 o f B om bay to be seen w ield in g the w illow . The native papers were very sarcastic and m ost severe, and frequently suggested that he did nothin g else bu t p lay cricket. These remarks, how ever, fell from his shoulder very easily, because after g oin g th orou gh ly into the m atter he found that d u rin g the tw elve m onths all that he gave to recreation was about 50 hours. H e, how ever, went on his w ay undeterred b y the p u b lic criticism s w ith the result that at the end o f his tenure of office he was thanked b y all the native society fo r havin g fostered n ot on ly cricket in B om bay, bu t E nglish sports in general. Our great pastime had un dou btedly taken a great hold upon the Indian people, because there w ere few villages now that could b e fou nd where little boys were not to b e seen playing. A s regards our own country the matches and visits b y the Australian teams had done a great deal tow ards bin din g the tw o countries m ore closely together. W hen, tw enty years ago, he played fo r K en t against L an ca shire at O ld Trafford the gate- m oney did not am ount to m ore than £40, bu t ten years ago it reached close upon £500, a fact which spoke fo r itself and proved that sport in E nglan d had considerably increased, and he was delighted to think that such was the case. Some people had complained that athletics at the present tim e took precedence in our p u blic schools aud colleges, bu t he denied that such was the case. I t was better to hear the boys m aking a noise in the p layin g fields than n ot k n ow in g where they w ere. H e thanked them all very sincerely fo r the splendid reception they had given him that evening. (L ou d and prolon ged cheers.) L o rd Harris presented the Senior Cup to the Cassland C .C ., the K nutsford Cup to H artley C .C ., and medals to the Lauderdale C .C ., and to the tw o clubs first mentioned. NORWOOD CLTJB.
