Cricket 1895
S e p t . 12, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 409 176 ■wickets, which gives an average of nearly 14J, while 1,495 were scored against them for 191 w ickets, an average o f 7f. T he soft ground in the latter part o f the season reduced the batting aver ages considerably. E ven then, they were decidedly above the average. Indeed, on the w hole, they are so creditable, that it may be o f interest to give them in full, if only as an indication o f prom ise for Scotch cricket. BATTING AVERAGES. M cK enzie last Saturday week at Perth. M cK enzie, w h o left in the N orham Castle on Saturday for South A frica, was, indeed, the recipient o f a lot o f p artin g gifts from athletic friends, and the gathering at Perth to bid him good speed was a striking evidence o f his popularity. F e w cricket teams in the K ingdom can claim such a record as that o f the Leinster Club during the latter part o f the season. A fter J u ly 6 , when they really them selves threw the match away, they did not lose a gam e, and, indeed, o f the fourteen matches w hich were played, as many as thirteen w ere w on . The one draw, too, was in their favour, so that the last half o f the season was a lo n g sequence o f brilliant successes. In their last match of the season, against the Phoenix Club, it deserves to be m entioned as som ething o f a curio that th irty-on e o f the forty wickets that fell were clean bow led. M u f f , the cricket contributor o f the Irish Field , is responsible for the fo llow in g statem ent:— That L . H . Gywnn, of Dublin University, was invited to play for South v. North this week, and in the face of an objection by the latter on the ground that he was not qualified, did not appear. Except the qualification he might derive from membership of the M.C.C., of course, Muff adds, his claims to take part in the match were scanty enough, hut one would imagine that in a contest of this character it might have been overlooked. Still it shows the respect the North must have for his ability when they went to the length of a formal protest. F or one I decline to believe for a m oment that any objection could ever have been contemplated. The on ly match betw een N orth v. South last w eek was at H astings. From what I kno w o f the prin cipal mem bers o f the N orthern eleven on that occasion, I w ould like to stake m y bottom dollar, whatever it m ay mean, that they w ould only have been too glad to w el com e the y ou n g Irishman as one o f their opponents. I HEAR a rum our that there is a dis position on the part o f some o f the more influential o f the Counties participating this season in the second-class com petition, to include Surrey’ s second eleven am ong the com petitors. The Durham executive were anxious fo r their eleven to have a go at Surrey’s second this year. N or w ou ld there have been any difficuly in the w ay o f the arrangement o f such a fixture, had the suggestion com e fairly early instead o f quite at the end o f the season, when m ost o f the Surrey players had made other arrangements. J. M . M e l d o n ’ s form as a cricketer is b y this time pretty w ell kuow n in E ngland, as w ell as on the other side of the A tlantic. It w ill be news to E nglish cricket readers, at all events, to know that there are six other members o f the fam ily taking part, and successfully, in Irish cricket. A nyh ow , though J . M . him self was conspicuous b y his absence, no less than six Meldons were represent in g Galw ay against C o. K ildare, on the Phcenix ground, last w eek. Seven of them , and all doing d uty for the same Club. There cannot be many instances of quite the same kind. J. P h illip s , he ow ns to the soft impeachment o f liking to be know n as “ Jim P h illips,” the M iddlesex profes sional, w ho alternates betw een E ngland and Australia, follow in g his pursuit as a cricketer at each in turn, is n ot one o f those w ho let I dare not w ait upon I w ould. Indeed, he loses no time in g et tin g away directly the w ork o f the season is over in either sphere. H e left in the Cuzco on F riday last for Australia, so that he should be back again in Mel bourne in g oo d time to fulfil his annual engagem ent w ith the M . C. C. o f that city. Phillips does not confine his atten tion to the pursuit o f cricket alone. Like Brockw ell, he is not quite a ’prentice hand in cricket journalism . H e does a pretty good trade too, I should take it, in cricket goods, as he deservedly enjoys a high reputation in Great as w ell as in Greater Britain. T h a t M r. H . T . H ew ett, the Captain of the E nglan d eleven, should have thought it advisable to retire from further participation in the match against Yorkshire, at Scarborough last week, in consequence o f the offensive remarks o f a certain section o f the crow d, must be regitetted by all who are interested in the w ell-b ein g o f the game. That the Captain should be soundly rated when play is not begu n as early, after the rain, as some Of the spectators w ould like, as they so often are, for what is, as everyone know s or ought to know is, the responsibility of the umpires alone is on ly excusable on the gronnd o f ignorance o f the gam e and its rules. I have seen some extenuation made for the action o f the crow d, partly on the grou n d that they paid to see the game, and partly bccause the public were m isled b y the name3 of players announced on the posters. B u t these shortcom ings are, after all, those o f the managem ent of the ground, and n ot o f the players. W hy the captains in this case, tw o thorough sportsmen, should have to bear these sentiments o f the spectators, even if this plea were to b e allow ed, is difficult to understand. T n E B ev. F . W . Terry, w h o captained the G entlem en o f Canada against the E nglish Amateurs, under the comm and o f Frank M itchell, at T oron to on F riday and Saturday, is the muscular Christian who represented Somersetshire some years ago. H e has been scoring pretty heavily during this summer in Canada, and his election to the im portant position o f Captain was on ly a fittin g recogn ition o f the g o o d w ork he has been d oin g of late in the diffusion o f cricket throughout the D om inion. So far, some o f the best b ow lin g on the side o f the E nglish eleven has been done b y J. C. H artley, the Sussex bow ler, who m any excellent ju d ges think ou gh t certainly to have g o t his blue at O xford. H e was notable to assist Sussex very much, b u t still in the six innings in w hich he did bow l, he took tw elve wickets at a cost o f less than thirteen runs apiece. T h e Surrey eleven are to have their usual outing at R ichm ond, on M onday and Tuesday next. The match which w ill be played on the ground o f the A thletic Association, w ill be against eighteen y ou n g players o f Surrey. The eighteen w ill be selected b y M r. Colt, Instructor, G rayburn, which is, o f itself, proof that the E leven w ill have a strong opposition to meet M r. W . W . B ead, Richardson, L ohm ann, and all the regular members o f the Cham pion C ounty team will be playing, so that the R ichm ond public should be sure o f some fair cricket. T h e n ext num ber o f Cricket is the last o f the w eekly summer numbers for the year. I t w ill be a terrible shock to thousands o f Cricket readers, but the fact remains, and it is kindest to give tim ely w arning. The first o f the m onthly num bers w ill be published on Thursday next. T o quote Captain Cuttle, “ W hen found, make a note on .” T h a n k s to M r. P . H . F oley, the H o n .- S ec.of the W orcestershireC .C .C ., to whose initiative was due, in a very great measure, the establishment o f the Second
