Cricket 1895
S e p t. 12, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 405 the county, have had quite enough of York shire before the festival opens ; still M. C. C. v. Yorkshire is an old stock piece, which could not be well dropped out of the pro gramme. Cannot W . G. and Stoddart be tempted north? Scarborough is far more bracing than Hastings ; for all that, the last match of the first festival ought not in future to clash with the first match of the second. If it does, Scarborough, it seems, will be the chief sufferer. Yorkshire’s decisive defeats in both matches— though against very mod erate teams—was the last straw. Down with the curtain. Hastings was itself as usual—brilliant weather we expect there—and a couple of most attractive matches, though even here there were some who made excuse at the last moment. The South gained a notable victory, but then MacLaren and Peel were missing from the Northern ranks. Some great batting, the cream being W . G. and Stoddart’s partnership of 150 runs in the second innings. I can gush no more, else would I wax eloquent over the latest of the centuries. But as there have been eight more this year from the same mighty bat, one is contented to offer silent homage. Stod dart’s double— 68 and 71— confirm my choice for the “ Best Eleven.” And Townsend—39 and 26 not out—gave promise of being very nearly good enough for the best company. Mold was an awful failure, whilst Richardson —eleven for 166 —as usual showed the way. I was personally more than pleased with Denton’ s first scores in a big match. Scores of 62 and 17 against such bowling were more than respectable. I had my eye on him long before he made his bow to county cricket, and one day I remarked to the county secretary : ‘ ‘ I f there are eleven better batsmen than Denton in Yorkshire, then I have not seen them.” And I was not far out. P.S.—Old Tom Sherman, one of the Surrey cracks thirty or forty years ago, and who has j ust celebrated his j ubilee as a cricketer, takes a benefit—a farewell benefit— on Mitcham Common next Saturday. If I were in London I would run down to this famous nursery of cricket; not being able to do so, it has been a pleasure to insert one’s name on the subscription list. I don’ t like mentioning th is; I do so solely in the interests of a good old cricketer. His address is 3, Grove Terrace, F igg’s Marsh, Mitcham. CHISWICK PARK v.
