Cricket 1895

S e p t. 5, 1895. CRTOKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 391 LEICESTERSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. At Leicester, August 29 and 30. That this return match brought both Leicestershire and Lancashire theirprogrammes to a conclusion. While thevisitors brought to the field the same eleven that were sue- cssful in defeating Middlesex at Lord’s, Leicester shire h-id to take the field wiihout Pougher. The d iy’s cricket was marred by an unfortunate accident to Paul, who was struck on the left breast just above the heart by a fast ball from Woodcock. He was removed to hospital, but the injury was not, it is hoped, very serious. Winning the toss, and going in first, Lancashire, in the marvellously short space of time of two hours an;l forty minutes, put together a total of 250. This was mainlythework of MacLaren, who S3ored 135 out of 220in two hours and a quarter, ou awicket that-was fast and a little fiery. When 48 he was missed at the wicket, and at 91he gave a chance in the long-field, but these were the ouly real mistikes in a superb display, lie completed his 50in as many minutes, and scored his 100out of 166in an hour and three quarters. The character of his play may well be gathered from the fact that his chief hits were two 6’s, two 5’s, twelve 4’s, ten 3’s, and six 2’s. With the exception of Briggs, no one else on the side met with anysuccess. With MacLaren Briggs scored 82 in forty minutes, and their partnership, which 0 ily lasted'an hour, produced no fewer than 118runs. 1nhis dashing inninus Briggs hit one 5, five 4’s, three 3’s, and two 2’s. Two hundred and forty-five runs from the bat were obtained from less than fifty-«even overs. Leicestershire offered a very poor resistance. Knight was in nearly an hour and a half for 29, and Tomlin and Woodcock also reached double figures, but the others failed completely. Briggs was quite the master of the batsmen, dismissing eight for the small cost of 17 runs. With the close of Leicester shire’s innings play ceased for the day. OnFiiday Leicestershire again made a poor show, and were put out a s-cond time by Briggs and Mold for the poor score of 68, their innings only lasting an hour and three quarters. Holland and Knight began so steaddyas to suggest hopes of better results, and half an hour elapsed before the first wicket fell, while 20 runs were scored. Two more wickets went down quickly, but Geeson and De Trafford stayed together for alittle time, the professional playing good cricket. At one point 40 was on the board with only three men out, and directly afterwards a series of disasters overtook the side. In one over Mold clean bowled De Trafford, Wright, and Bacon, the fourth, fifth, and six wickets falling at 41. Hincks and Geeson lrft at 46, the latter having made 19out of 24, and Woodcock being quicklydismissed, nine wickets were dowu for 48. Whiteside and Stocks indulged in a little quiet batting, and the innings ended asit began with a partnershipof 20. Lancashire thuswon by an innings and 100 runs. Mold and Briggs, as against Middlesex at Lord’s earlier in the week, bowled un changed throughout the match. In thefull record of the match Briggs accomplished the splendid feat of laking twelve wickets for 49 mns, while Mold’s figures were eight for 97. Mold now shares with Richardson. his great Surrey rival, the distinction of having taken over 200wickets in important cricket this season. Score and analysis L a n c a sh ir e .
