A ug . 29, 1895. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 381 M IDDLESEX v. LANCASH IRE. At Lords, August 26th, 27th, and 28th. No start wasmade in this match on Monday until half-past two, owing to showers. Lancashire played A. N. Hornby instead of C. H. Benton, and H. B. Hayman re-appearedforMiddlesexinplaceof SirT. C. O’Brien. The wicket was of course slow, but HornbyandWard began scoring at a capital pace, and 34 had been registered when the amateur left for a merry 24. 8 u£g came in and a capital stand ensued, the new comer doing nearly all the rungetting, the second wicket falling at 98, Sugg Having made 43 out of 64 in fifty minutes, though he gave one or two hard chances. MacLaren came in, but at 120 lost Ward, whose 37 was a characteristic display. Tyldesley did not btay long, but during his stay his captain scored 14 from one over of Stoddart’s. The thirdwicket fell at 137, and just here MacLaren, when 29. gave a difficult chance, which was not taken. From that point he played a faultless game, and though Baker and Paul left at 168, and Briggs at 184, he took the score to 236 withSmithbeforeplayceasedforthe day, his partners from the fall of Ward’s wicket having contributed but 29 outof 116. MacLarenon Monday had brought his total runs for the season to 1,018, but he was not destined greatly to increase his score on Tuesday, for at 249, when he had made 108, he was caught at mid-off. He had been batting two hours and ten minutes, and, despite an early chance, his innings was an excellent one. The remaining wickets added only11runs. Mold and Briggs bowled when Middlesex went in, and between ten minutes past one and five minutes to six they twice dismissed theMetropolitan county for a total of 166. Stoddart should have been caught at point before scoring, and Douglas had two or three escapes. However, 33 runs had beenmade in half an hour before Stoddart S ’ayed on. Hayman was quickly run out, and at 44 ouglas’s lucky innings terminated, and Lucas was caught from a skier. At 50 Warner left, and then Webbe and Rawlin did their best to improvematters, Rawlin making several good hits before Mold upset his wicket at 72. Phillips was in a long time for 5, but was out at 80, and Bray and Hearne were dis missed with 3 runs added. C. M. Wells was too unwell to bat, so Middlesex had to follow on 177 behind. Off Briggs’ first over 8 runs came, but Mold’s first ball bowled Douglas, and at 13 Stoddart was well caught in the long-field. Lucas gained a pair of spectacles at 17, and at 27 Hayman left. Rawlin was bowled at 34,Warner stumped at 44, and Phillips caught at 47. Bray made 11 out of 17 by some tall hits before being bowled at 64, and 13 later Hearne was out, Webbe being again left to carry out his bat, as Welis was still too unwell to play. In the match Briggs had nine wickets for 78, and Mold nine for 72, Middlesex thus being defeated by an innings and 100runs. Score and analysis L ancashire . Mr. A. N.
