Cricket 1895

A ug. 29, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 375 LANCASH IRE v. NOTTINGHAMSH IRE. At Manchester, August 22, 23 and 24. Gunn and Flowers were still absent from the Notts team, the latter being detained by his father’s funeral, but Lan cashire had exactly the same team as was unexpec tedly defeated at Derby. Notts, who went in first, started very well, Shrewsbury and Jones in sixty-five minutes putting on 68runs for the first wicket. A. O. Jones went on battingwell after Shrewsburyleft, and and was fifth out at 97, having been one hundred minutes at the wicket. With the exception of Daft’s 29 not out, there was no other good score, and the whole side was out for 154 on a good run getting wicket. When Lancashire went in, Attewell got two wickets and the score had reached only 38, but Albert Ward and MacLaren then defied the bowlers for an hour and twenty-five minutes, and during that time put on 108runs, this was amost praiseworthy display as the light was very bad. MacLaren gave a chance when34, at the wicket, but this was the only mistake made. Next day the total was carried to 213 before Ward left. His 82occupied himthree hours and ten minutes, and though he gave a chance before he had scored there was no other fault in his innings. Mac- Laren went on hitting until at 327, he was caught for 152 out of 289 while at the wicket, with only one chance. He hit a5, sixteen 4’s, eight 3’s, and fifteen 2’s. It is curious that neither Bagguley nor Wilkin son was put on to bowl during this long innings. Notts were 223in arrears, and began their task well. Shrewsbury was bowled after getting well set, but 84 were scored on Friday night for the loss of three wickets. On SaturdayJones and Dixon played capital cricket, and took the score to 157 before the former was caught. The partnership of 87 had occupied one hundred minutes. Jones might have been caught when 36, but his 53 in two hours and ten minutes was a fine display. Dixon went on playing well, but the other batsmen collapsed, indeed, no one was found to stay with him, and at the finish he was not out for 83, one of the very best innings he has ever played. He was at the wickets three hours and ten minutes and made no mistake whatever. Amongst his hits were thirteen 4’s, two 3’s, and four 2’s, and it was entirely due to him that the innings’ defeat was averted. Lancashire needed but eight to win, and these were obtained without the loss of a wicket. On the Notts side of 359 runs from thebat, ShrewsburyandMessrs. Dixon and Jones made 282. For Lancashire, Mr. MacLaren’s remarkable 152 and Briggs’ bowling 12 wickets for 119 runs stand out prominently, as does also thewicketkeepingof Smith, who, inall, dismissed seven batsmen.
