Cricket 1895

A ug . 22, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 365 HAMPSHIRE y. WARWICKSHIRE. At Southampton, August 19th, 20th, and 21st. Warwickshire, though without J. E. Hill and the Rev. E. Pereira, brought a strong team to endeavour to repeat their victory of a fortnight ago, whilst Hampshire had a very good eleven. Hampshire won the toss and began so well with Captain Wynyard and A. J. L* Hill that a long score seemed in prospect. Though they started slowly, only 20 runs coming in the first half hour, this pair afterwards played capital cricket, and in seventy-five minutes scored 81 for the first wicket. Barton, however, was out at 98. and at 103 Hill’s fine innings came to a close. He had been batting ninety minutes, and in his 61 were eight 4’s and six 3’s. The rest of the side, except Bacon who forced the game, did little, Santall bowling very well, and finishing up with 34 balls for no runs and two wickets. Warwickshire began with Richards and Walter Quaife, and lost the former and Diver for 41 before play was adjourned, Walter Quaife havingbattedwellfor 22notout. The brothers Quaife played well on Tuesday, and though the younger was out at 86, Walter continued to defy the bowling finding good support, after Lilley left without scoring, in his captain. He was at last out ninth for his first century for his county this year, making more than half the runs from the bat. Hampshire were 17 behind on the first innings and did very badly in the time left for play, five wickets going down for 79, the wicket playing very trickily and Glover bowling very well. HillandBartonmade something of a stand, but Captains Wynyard and Quinton were dismissed very cheaply. Yesterday, fifty minutes sufficed to finish off the Hampshire innings for 114, thanks to some excellent bowling by Pallett and Glover. Warwickshirerequired98towin, and H. W. Bainbridge *nd W. Quaifeplayedso finely that 81 were compiled without loss; but then the captain was splendidly caught by Wynyard from his own bowling, and three more wickets fell for the addition of five runs. Itwas while W. G. Quaifeand Diver were together that the winning hit was made, Warwickshire being left winners by six wickets. Score and analysis :— H ampshire . First Innings. Capt.
