Cricket 1895

A ug . 22, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 359 YORKSHIRE v. ESSEX. At Harrogate. August 15th and 16th. On a veiy soft wicket the Essex men gained an unexpected but meritorious victory over Yorkshire by 16 runs in a small scorins match. F. S. Jackson and Moorhouse were absent from the Yorkshire team, but Essexwere well represented. Going in first Essex started disas trously, Carpenter and McGahey leaving before a run had been scored, whilst Owen was dismissed for a single. A S. Johnston hit a few but Russell was soon out. five wickets being down for 27. Then Fane joined Kortright, and. playing capital cricket, made nearly all the runs until Kortright left at 47. Eight wickets were down for 54, but Fane and BuU in twenty minutes added 27, and the former was finally not out, having been batting for thirty-four minutes. Peel and Hirst bowled unchanged, and the analysis shows the latter’s marvellous performance. York shire began well with 27 for the first wicket, and 50 went up with two only out. Mitchell was at the wickets forty minutes for his 33, which included two 6’8out of the ground, Denton played admirably for fifty-five minutes, but the tail was out of joint, and in the end the Essex total was left but 30behind. The Easterner’s second attempt commencedmoder ately threewickets falling for 25, but on the second dayA. S.Johnstone and F. G. Bullplayed finecricket, and in three-quarters of an hour put on 62for the fourth wicket. With McGahey, Johnston added another 29, when the latter was out for 63, which he madewithout a chance in eighty-five minutes, hitting asix, seven 4’s, and ten 2’s. McGahey and Fane alsomade a stand and 150 went up with five out. Then Peel went on and bowled thirty balls for 5 runs and four wickets. McGahey was left not out after a faultless inuings of sixty-five minutes, containing sound defence and good hitting. Yorkshire wmted 1H6 to win, and at one time had made 86 for two wickets, which looked like a winning advantage. This was due to a good start by Mitchell and Brown, who hit up 39 in twenty minutes. Brown was out at 54, but Tunnicliffe and Denton added 32. Thencame a turning point; Tunnicliffe was caught on the boundary and Lord Hawke yorked, wicket falling after wicket to Mead and Kortright, till nine were out at 102. Then Moun&ey and Hunter pluckily made a stand, and amid some excitement the score was taken to 119, when the wicket-keeper was out, andEssex won as above stated. Score and analysis: E ssex .
