3^8 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 22 , 1895. SOMERSETSH IRE v. K EN T . At Taunton. August 15th, 16th, and 17th. Kenthad but a weak team being without Rashleigh, Patterson. Mordaunt and K<rap. Huish appeared for the first time siuce his accident on W hit Monday. Somerset shire had about their strongest eleven. Kent went in ftret, and Mr. Livesay and A. Hearne made a good start, •< l being scored for the first wicket. Alec left at 67, but Easby and Mason were in capital form and the total had been advanced to 142 before the amateur, who therein completed his 1,000 runs thi* year, left for an excellent f,0 made in 55 minutes. He hit eight 4’s and two 3’s. On being joined by Stewart. Easby hit out and at 155 wns caught for a l-ood 44. The r« main- ing batsmen did fairly well and Kent’s total of 235 was a very fair achievement. For Somersetshire Fowler and Palairet opened, but the former was caught before any score had been recorded. Bradley, the new Kent bowler, who has began a series of innings of 1. after a teries of 0, was hit freely, and Palairet and Roe took the score to 77 for 2 when play was adjourned. On Friday. Palairet -was out at 8i, having been in 85 minutes for his 44. and laid the foundation of a good score. The next six batsmen all add. d innings of double figures to the total. Nichol’s 39 in half an hour being the most notable, and Kent were seven ahead on the first innings. In their second attempt Livesay failed, but Hearne and Easby added 3y for the second wicket. Then Mason and Stewart were dismissed, Easby playing very well till Baiss came in and a good stand was made, the profe sional leaving at 85. One run later >1archant hit wicket, but Baiss and \\ri.hi made a capiial resistance until at last Baiss was out at 150 for 38 a very careful sc- re made in an hour and three-quarters. Wright’s 39 had occupied him an hour, and he left at once after Bai>s Martin and Br.idley were out at 161 and 16ti ie?pec- tively, Somersetshire wanting 171 to win In a few minutes on Friday 12 of these were scored without loss and the match was adjourned till Saturday, being the only one of the five county games commenced on Thursday which ran into the Saturday. Dnnlop and Fowler then soon put their county into a winning position the latter leaving at 47 when L. Palairet came and both batsmen punished the bowling severely, ICO went up after an hour and a quarter’splay and nowicket fell till 131 when Dunlop was out for a dashing 65 in an hour and a half. R. Palairet joined his brother and it looked as if the game would be won without further loss, but at 171 L. Palairet was out for a finely played 5 ' which occupied him an hour and three-quarters. Only three runs were then needed and Nichols at once made these. Somersetshire winning by seven wickets. Score and analysis : - K e n t . First Innings. Mr. R. O. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE v. MIDDLESEX. A t Nottingham, August 15th and 16th. Middlesex were strong, but Notts were without Gunn (ill), Hardstaff (unable to play), and Daft (left out). A young Eastwood batsman, named Longdon, made a creditable first appearance. Notts opened with Shrewsbury and A . O. Jones, who were together eighty-five minutes for the first wicket, when at 83 the Cantab left for a capitally played 44. Shrewsbury outstayed him three-quarters of an hour, and his 67 was quite in hispid style. Mr. P. W . Oscroft batted very slowly, occup \ing an hour and three-quarters in getting 28, while Longdon, the new man, made his 20 m just over half an hour. The remaining seven bats men averaged 2 runs apiece. The beginning of Mid dlesex’s innings was noteworthy for a fine display of hitting by Mr J. Douglas, who. in a little over an hour, hit up 50 out of 76, Middlesex leaving off 89 behind, with six wickets in hand. On Friday, the remaining batsmen did none too well till Phillips joined Sir T. C. O’Brien, the score then being 178 for eight; though P. F. Warner had he ped him to add 53 for the sixth wicket in an hour. W ith Phillips Sir Timothy put on 39 for the ninth, and Hearne was still more useful, as the last partnership realised 54 in forty minutes. O’Brien was not out 123, and his aggregate for the season was raised to 1,047. He was batting three hours and a half and gave no chance, though when 66 he was caught from a no-ball. He hit ten 4’s, nine 3’s. and fifteen 2’s. Notts were 93 to the bad, and again Shrewsbury and Jones made a good start, 55 in three-quarters of an hour being the record when they were separated. But, as in the first innings, the bowlm* of C. M. Wells was too much for the later batsmen, and despite some very steady bat ting by Oscroft and a few good hits by Attewell, the sum s^t for Middlesex to obtain was only 35. Seven Nottingham batsmen again averaged 2 runs, Wells in the match having twelve wickets for 71. In order to finish the matcu, play was prolonged until nearly seven o’clock, but Middlesex lost two wickets in obtaining the necessary runs. The result of this match is to leave the lace county last on the list in the county championship series, an example, which could not well be improved upon, of the vicissitudes of cricket.
