348 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. Aua. 15, 1895. SURREY v. YORK SH IRE . A t Kennington Oval, August 12th, 13 h, and 14th. The sixty-ninth match between these counties was played for the Dent-fit of Robert Abel, whose four teenth yeai in the service of Surrey is now in progress, and with whom are constantly associated in most people’s minds many of their most pleasing recollec tions of Surrey cricket. There is no need, nor is this the place to recapitulate even the barest outlines of his long and valuable services, suffice it to say that no cricketer is more, or more deservedly respected than the Guv’nor. Surrey left out M. Read, Holland, and Lockwood, and included Brockwell, Street, and Smith. Yorkshire had their best team in the absence of Mr. E. Smith. The wicket looked good, having escaped the heavy rain of the early morning, and Mr. Key through some oversight having won the toss, Abel and Brockwell commenced Surrey’s first innings. It was pleasant to be reminded, by this unusual order of going in, of last season’s partnerships between these men, and more so by their success. The York- shiremen evidently intended to throw away no runs in the field, and Peel, Jackson, and Wainwright, who went on at 25 bowled their best. After an hour’s play 39 were registered, and 50 went up in seventy minutes. A t 68 Hirst and Peel went on, and at 74 Brockwell was caught at the wicket, his 43 having occupied him an hour and a half, and being his best display this season. Hayward was out in the same way as Brockwell at 77, and N. F. Druce was caught at 81. W . W . Read began scoring quickly, making two 4’s and a 5, but Abel at 108 was another victim to Hunter, having batted two hours and a quarter for 32, a very good innings. Lohmann hit the 10 runs recorded during his stay but was finely caught at 118, and W . W . also left, having been at the wickets three-quarters of an hour for 27. Street was dis missed at 124, and Key at 133, having batted twenty minutes for 11, whilst at 134 Hirst bowled Richardson and at 136 Peel dismissed W ood and finished off the innings. Yorkshire began their innings sensation ally, Mitchell being stumped at 1 without scoring, and Tunnicliffe being clean bowled at the same figure. Brown and F. S. Jackson made a capital stand, and in sixty-five minutes 90 runs were put on, Brown playing in quite his old form and mastering the Sur rey bowling. In the course of his innings Jackson completed his 1,000 runs this year. At 91, Haywaid dismissed both Jackson and Denton, but Peel and Brown showed another good resistance to the bowling and bad passed the Surrey score by 12 runs when play was adjourned. During the day 15,3oi paid gate, so that Abel commenced his benefit well. Tuesday was a dies non , rain in the morning coming down in torrents, rendering the ground quite unfit for play. Despite the dreadful weather, over 1,300 enthusiasts paid for admission. Yesterday, Brown was out after adding 4 to his score. His 83 runs occupied him 110 minutes, and he hit ten 4’s, nine 3’s, five 2’s, and six singles—a remarkable innings, and the feature of the match. Wainwright was soon done with, but Moorhouse came to stay, and with Peel took the score to 204. The latter was then out for 51 made in 100 minutes by good cricket. Moorhouse hit up 38 in an hour and a quarter, and Yorkshire finished up with a had of 108. Surrey began fairly well, Abel making 23, being missed when 8 ; Street and Hayward playing in good style, the third wicket falling for 46 ; but with the exception of N. F. Druce, who quickly compiled a dozen, no one else made much resistance to some excellent bowling, Hirst, as his analysis demonstrates, being especially deadly; indeed, the left-hander has rarely bowlea as well. Wainwright also was very successful in enticing the batsmen to hit with fatal results. There was little excuse for Surrey’s defeat by an innings and 30 runs. Hirst in the match had nine wickets for 59 runs, and to him and Brown Yorkshire chiefly owe their easy victory. Score and analysis:— S u r r e y .
