Cricket 1895

A u g . 15, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 343 LEICESTERSH IRE v. DERBYSH IRE. A t Leicester, August 8th, 9th, and 10th. The wicket was in bad condition from the recent rains, and Mr. de Trafford was justified in putting the visitors in first, after winning the toss. Derbyshire were without Mr. Evershed, and Leicestershire still minus W ool cock. The principal features of the first day’s play were a fine innings by Chatterton, and a great stand for Derbyshire’s last wicket by G. G. Walker and Porter. Leicestershire began very well getting within 68 of their opponents score for the loss of De Trafford and Holland, mainly owing to a fine batting display by the captain. On Friday, however, an astonishing change came over the game, G. G. Walker at a cost of 23 runs taking the eight remaining wickets, perhaps the most remarkable bowling performance of the season, and by far the best piece of bowling he has done for a long time. The failure of Leicestershire cannot be attributed entirely to the wicket, for on Derbyshire going in 275 runs were scored before they were disposed of. The chief credit for this success was due to Walter Sugg, who took out his bat for 104, including one 5, sixteen 4’s, six 3’s, six 2’s, and five singles; a yery fine innings as the detail shows. No great stand was made until G. G. Walker helped him to add 78 for the ninth wicket. Leicestershire wanted 316 to win, but in the remainder of the afternoon’s play they fared badly, four wickets falling for 61, and on Satur day the result was never in doubt though Knight and Chapman put on 31 runs for the sixth wicket, and F. Wright also batted pluckily. Knight took out his bat for 63 after being at the wicket for two hours, but like Sugg on the Derbyshire side, finding no one to stay sufficiently long with him. Derbyshire won by 127 runs, after having had much the worse of the opening day’s play. Score and analysis : D e r b y s h ir e . First Innings. Mr. L. G.
