Cricket 1895
A ug . 8, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 333 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v . SUSSEX. A t Bristol, August 5th, 6th, and 7th. Each side was strongly represented, Sussex giving a trial to Mr. J. C. Hartley of Oxford, who was just outside this year’s University eleven, and Gloucestershire making no change from the victorious team of last week. It was therefore a disappointment to all con cerned that rain fell s o steadily that it was not possible even to make a start on Monday. On Tuesday a start was made, but only thirty-five minutes play was possible, showers falling all the day, and in the course of the afternoon parts of the ground were under water. Marlow and Ranjitsinhji were in the short period of play disposed of by► Jessop, the score being 30 for two wickets. Yesterday, on a cakey wicket, Townsend and Jessop bowled with great effect and the whole side was disposed of for 99, the innings lasting an hour and three quarters. Glouces ter began very badly, losing Grace, Ferris, and Humphrey for 20, but Jessop and Wrathall put a better aspect on matters, the former hitting up 53. including nine 4’s, in half-an-hour, and Townsend also making a good show in his 28 made in fifty minutes, the Gloucestershire total reached 159. Sussex were 60 runs'to the bad, and made a shockingly bad show, all being disposed of for 60, Townsend being quite irresistable. Gloucestershire making the small sum required without loss, and winning by ten wickets, a result as will be seen by the analysis, chiefly due to Jessop and Townsend. Score and S u ssex .
