Cricket 1895
326 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 8, 1895. YORKSHIRE v . HAMPSHIRE. A t Sheffield, August 1st and 2nd. The absence of Messrs. Jackson and Mitchell from the Yorkshire team was by no means fortunate for the northerners in this match in which 38 wickets fell for 444runs and Hampshire won by two wickets. It is by no means depreciatory of Hampshire’s excellent bowling to say that the batting of the two Cantabs might possibly have turned the scale. In the Hants team appeared Mr. E. H. Buckland who will be well remembered as the old Oxford bowler, but who has not been seen in first-clasp cricket for some years. He, with seven wickets for 61 runs, made a distinguished re-entry into county cricket and should be very useful to Hampshire. In Yoikshire’s first innings his bowling and that of Baldwin were quite too much on a bowler’s wicket for all the batsmen except three, Brown, Lord Hawke, and Mounsey, the remaining eight contributing four runs apiece. But Peel and Wainwright bowled so well when the turn of Hamp shire for batting arrived, that but for A. J. L. Hill, who was the batting hero of the match, the southern county would have fared even worse. Hill made 46 of 120 from the bat in capital style and with a confidence very uncommon on such a wicket. On Friday York shire went in with arrears of 17 and these were obtained by Brown without loss. But adding five, the Driffield professional was bowled off his pads, having scored all the runs then obtained, and Tunni cliffe and Denton, who played in excellent form, looked like running up a bii? score. Tunnicliffe was in fifty minutes for 13 and Denton an hour for 32, but on their dismissal wickets fell very fast to Soar, who took his first four wickets for seven runs. Eight wickets were down for 83, and though Mounsey and Hirst put on 24 for the nin^h the side was all out for 111. Hampshire wanted 95 to win, and three wickets fell for 19. Then a shower fell, and Hill, when play resumed, hit finely, the wicket being easier, Captain Quinton, his partner, playing a strictly defensive game, not opening his score for half an hour. Fifty- five runs were added for the fourth wicket, which fell at 74, leaving 25 to get to win. Yorkshire played up very hard, and Steele was dismissed at 79, Buckland at 83. Hill at 87, and Soar at 88. Bencraft and Bald win were then together and every ball was watched with interest. The batsmen proved equal to the occasion and, amid great excitement, slowly obtained the necessary seven, Hants thus obtaining a most creditable victory. Score and analysis Y orkshire .
