Cricket 1895
322 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g . 8, 1895. “ Very few indeed. The only ^startling fact about my average was its badness, I believe it worked out to four. I fancy I was in too much of a hurry to get runs and to justify my being played to really do myself justice.” “ But I see by the averages in the papers this week that you have done very much better this season ? ’ ’ “ Yes, I am glad to say. Until a week or two ago I was at the head of the Kent County averages. But then Mr. Mason and Alec took it into their heads to put up cen turies for the first wicket, as well as centuries to their individual accounts, and now they have both gone over me. “ Talking of centuries, you have yet to make your first in county cricket ? ” “ I haven’t yet done as much, but live in hope of so doing. My best score as yet has been 73 against Middlesex at Tonbridge. I have also exceeded the half century on two or three occasions this season, so that the time may come.” “ You have, I know, made some big score3 for the St. Laurence and other clubs. Will you tell me a few of your best innings ? ” “ I made 172 not out the first day I ever played at Canterbury, and I have since scored 202 (then retiring) and 213. My average for the St. Laurence last year was something over 50, and so far this year it is 74.” “ The team is, I see, just going out into the field, so I will let you off with one more question. You have lately several times taken the gloves for the county ; how do you like the position of wicket-keeper ? ” ‘ *Well, candidly, not a great deal, though I believe I performed satisfactorily for an emergency man. But, you know, someone must take the place, and if my services are considered more useful in that position I am quite willing to do my best at the wickets.” There are a good many batsmen who have this year made more runs than Easby, but there are no few amongst them who have more frequently failed altogether. His con sistency in scoring has been the feature of his play throughout the season, and he seems to have got rid of the over-anxiety to score which young players who do not come from Notts manifest pretty generally. His failures last year, in the few appearances that the liberal supply of amateur cricketers which Kent possesses in the autumn allowed him, led many people to think that the County Com mittee had made a mistake in retaining his services. But some very good judges, including the professional members of the team, were confident that with fuller opportunities Easby would show that there is plenty of good cricket in him. This year, at a time when the fortunes of cricket have been going against Kent, he has justified the predictions of his friends and has been one of the main stays of the team. Standing only 5 feet 8| inches, he ranks among cricketers of but medium height, but he gets well over the ball, and as his weight is 12 st. 3 lbs., he thereby makes up for any lack of height. He is not afraid to use the hitting power which he possesses in common with most soldier and ex-soldier cricketers, and as he attains but bis 28th year on Monday, he should with greater experience reach a still higher rank amongst players. Altogether, he may be reckoned a great acquisition by Kent, lor not every day is found in one player a man who can bat well, can bowl a decent ball upon occasion, can iield surely anywhere, and can don the wicket-keeper’ s gloves with success. He is a man of a genial temperament, and is a great favourite with the crowd on the ground which is his cricket home. During the winter months Easby finds employment as an attendant at the Kent County Lunatic Asylum, of which Dr. Fitzgerald, whose heavy scoring for the Cane Hill Asylum when he was there some years since will be well remembered by many metropolitan cricketers, is the principal medical officer.
