Cricket 1895

310 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A c g . 1, 1895. HAMPSHIKE v. ESSEX. So moist was the ground at Southampton last Thursday that this match could not be commenced until half-past four in the afternoon. Hants made a good start. Kortright being unable to find foothold, and in an hour Hill and Barton knocked up 76 before Hill left for a vigorous 37, including seven 4’s. Capt. Wynyard was in half an hour for 10, but R. A . Studd failed, and Ward also being disposed of at 109, Hants were not in a very favorable position. W ootton, however, stayed with Barton, who was batting fault lessly until play was adjourned with the score 122 for four. On Friday Mead quickly disposed of the not outs, Barton’s 79 being made in two hours and a half with out the semblance of a bad stroke, and finished by a fine running catch. Six wickets were down for 148, but Bencraft and Bacon added 45 in forty minutes, while Soar rapidly hit up 30 out of 48 during his stay. Mead bowled splendidly, 67 run? only out of 240 coming from his bowling, though he sent down 47 overs out of 111. Essex’s innings was remarkable for the play of three men, H. G. Owen, A. P. Lucas, and C. J. Kortright, who made 95 out of 117 from the bat. Fifty-six were made by the last named two during their partnership, .the only time when Ba'dwin’s capital bowling was at all punished, Kortright driving him out of the ground for 6. Three wickets went at 118, and the ninth fell at that total, with 6 required to save the foliow on. This was, however, accom plished, and Hampshire 118 to the good did but badly in the time left for play on Friday, three wickets falling for 41 runs. On Saturday wickets fell very rapidly, and nine were down for 73, when Baldwin and Soar for the last wicket repeated Brockwell and Richardson’s feat of the previous day at the Oval, and put on 63 runs for the last wicket, a curious coinci dence. Mead had again bowled splendidly, and his record for the match was 17 wickets for 119 runs. When Essex went in to make 255, Baldwin was once more to the front, hitting the sticks six times and getting Lucas lbw. His record for the match was 13 wickets for 78, a very fine performance. Of the Essex batsmen the only scores were made by Bums and Kortright, who put on 39 for the sixth wicket, eight men making together but 21 runs. There were no extras in this innings. The compiler is evidently much in earnest, stating that the idea of publishing the annual has been ‘ drove into him,’ and trusting that the book will become ‘ a dire necessity amongst a’l cricketers in these parts.’ No doubt next year’s issue will be improved in several up-to-date particulars, but the present annual affords much information, interesting even beyond the confines of Barbados, and the article on school cricket contains many admonitions which need enforcing at home as much as in the Caribbees. The proud Barbadians are especially proud of P. F. Warner, who hails from Harrison College in the island. C. A. Snell, b Bienvenu 37 F. F. Musson, b Wells 38 W .
