Cricket 1895
J u l y 25, 1895. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 301 SUSSEX v. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. In curious contrast to the Trent Bridge match between these counties in May last, when Notts made the then record score of 726, Monday’s play in this match at Hove was, chiefly owing to the effect on the wicket of the rains, all in favour of the bowlers. Notts were without Shrewsbury, whose injured hand vetoed his playing, but J. A. Dixon resumed his place, and Hardstaff strengthened the bowling. In seventy minutes Notts lost four of their best wickets for 42, but worse was to come, and at 68 Attewell, Daft, and Gunn, who had played very well, were all out. Gunn and Attewell had made 29 for the fifth wicket, and Wilkinson and Bagguley put on 23 for the ninth, but Notts were all out for two less than a century. Sussex did little better. Marlow and Bean wrere both out at 16, and Murdoch, Ranjitsinhji, Newham, and Arlington were all disposed of in fifty-five minutes’ play for 29 runs, and an utter collapse looked prob able. Fry, however, batted in resolute style, and stayed until the score was 51. Parris then hit vigor ously, scoring 9, 9, and 10 in consecutive overs, and in all made 35 out of 36 in twenty minutes. Butt, in his turn, knocked up 22 out of 24, and, after all, Sussex were 23 ahead on the first innings. Notts opened their second innings badly on Tuesday, W right leaving at 3; but thanks to Bagguley and Gunn, the latter of whom made 34—the same number as in the first innings—before being splendidly caught by Ranjitsinhji, 58 runs were put on for the second wicket, which fell at 61. Flowers gave a chance when 1, but escaping, 55 were made before Bagguley was out for a well-hit 62 made in an hour and three quarters. Flowers was again missed at 28, and at 55 was nearly stumped, and again at 74 gave a half chance, but runs came freely, and 116 had been added when at 232 the fourth wicket fell, Dixon’s 34 in cluding a number of neat late hits in the slips. At 236 Flowers was easily caught and bowled when five short of the century. His innings was very lucky, but in two hours and forty minutes he had hit eleven 4’s, four 3’s, and seven 2’s. Then came a collapse, no one else reaching double figures, and the side being out for 261. Sussex had 239 to get to win, and Marlow and Bean were both out for 8. Murdoch and Ranjitsinhji came to the rescue and added 44 runs without further loss before play was adjourned. Yes terday’s was a one man display, Ranjitsinhji losing Murdoch with a single added. Fry came in and play was very steady for some time, the Indian being missed when 60 by Gunn, but at 110 Fry was caught and bowled by Attewell, 57 having been put on for the wicket. Newham stayed while 31 were put on, when half the side were out for 141. Two more wickets fell quickly and Sussex’s last chance expired when Ran jitsinhji was out for exactly a century, which had in it fifteen 4’s. In the end Notts won by 67 runs.
