Cricket 1895

300 CRICKET: A W 1EKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 25, 1895. LANCASHIRE v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Though Painter was unable to assist liis county owing to a family bereavement, Gloucestershire had a strong team for this match, commenced at Man chester on Monday. W inning the toss, Grace took in Wrathall with him on a wicket wet and for a time easy, and a very good start was made, 54 going up in forty-five minutes without loss. After the luncheon interval a drying wicket gave Briggs a chance of which he availed himself to the fullest. Time, Grace stayed in an hour for an additional 14, and Heming way, the Cantab, hit Mold for three 4’s in one over, but the batsmen generally failed entirely, Briggs in the end capturing eight wickets for 41, but his analysis after the interval read : 15 overs, 4 maidens, 21 runs, 8 wickets. Maclaren at the commencement of the northern county’s innings was in splendid form, and registered 25 out of the first 30 runs in half an hour. Ward and Sugg improved matters after Paul failed, though the hitter had a life -when 2. The fourth wicket fell at 90, but the remaining six bats men only added 17 more, and Lancashire were but eight to the good on the first innings, thanks to Jessop’s excellent bowling. Grace and Maclaren played by far the best cricket on their respective sides. For the first time this year W . G. was dismissed on Tuesday for a single figure innings and when, at the end of eighty-five minutes’ play four men were out for 50 runs, it seemed that the Westerners were doomed to easy defeat. But then matters improved, Rice and Townsend in forty minutes adding 43. Then, after Townsend left, Jessop scored 34, ;seven fine 4’s, a 3 and a single in twenty minutes. Rice was seventh out at 149, having carefully played for two hours and a quarter for 37. Ferris and De W inton made a capital stand and put on 51 in as many minutes, but Capt. Luard being recalled to his military duties was unable to bat and the innings closed for 200. W ith 193 to win Sugg and Ward com menced Lancashire’s second innings, but the former and Paul were cheaply accounted for. Ward, how ever, hit freely and in seventy-five minutes contributed 50 out of 83. Baker, and Tyldesley, the colt, hit bril liantly and in thirty-five mmutes added 49, which gave their county an advantage, the close of play finding Lancashire within 45 of victory with five wickets to fall. This task they might have been ex pected to easily accomplish, but yesterday the ground was too sodden to be fit for cncket and play was postponed until after lunch, when the pitch still being unplayable, and an offer to pitch fresh wickets being declined, the game was abandoned as a draw. Extras........... WARWICKSHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE A t Birmingham, on Monday, no play was possible owing to rain, and on the following day winning the toss was a doubtful advantage to Leicestershire, for the state of the turf assisted Pallett and Whitehead, and in an hour and fifty-five minutes the whole side were out for 106. Three wickets fell for 15, but Tomlin, with a freely hit 29, improved matters, and his example was followed up by Geeson and Hill yard, while Knight was batting an hour and ten minutes for 19. Going in when five wickets were down for 49 he was last out at 106. In half-an-hour Bainbridge and Walter Quaife scored 18, but with 13 added the professional was clean bowled, the partnership having realised 31 in fifty minutes. W ith W illie Quaife in, an hour an twenty minutes saw 83 runs realised before Bainbrid^e was caught. Bainbridge’s 75 was the result of two hours and ten minutes’ faultless cricket, and among his figures were eleven 4’s. In two overs from Hillyard he .scored 22 by five drives to the on boundary and a 2. Diver failed to score, but with Lilley in, runs again came fast, 53 being added for the fourth wicket in thirty-five minutes, the famous wicket-keeper making 45, which included seven 4’s. He was badly missed when he had made 34, but otherwise his play was free from fault. Santall contributed a useful 20 out of 41 for the next wicket, and then Law stayed with young Quaife till the close of play, when the total had been increased to 238. Yesterday three more wickets were lost in addinsr 35 to the score and the innings was declared. Leicestershire again started very badly, two wickets falling at once. Geeson and Chapman played pluekily, but despite their efforts nine wickets had fallen for 69when rain stopped play. On resuming the wicket played more easily, and ; Knight and Whiteside kept their wickets till the call of time, Warwickshire experiencing the hard luck of a draw, when Leicestershire had 87 to get to save the innings defeat and only one wicket to fall, themselves having declared with eight wickets down in their first innings.
