Th is m atch, comm enced a t the O val la st Thursday, was n ot fated to be broug ht to a definite conclusion, which, as the gam e w entwas by no m eans any grievous loss to the leaders in the County com petition. Surrey were s till w ith o u t W . W . Head, and N . F . Druce was not yet included, nor d id Loh m an n find a place. D erbyshire had not the services o f S. H . Evershed, Bennett and H ulm e. Th ou gh Sugg was bow led w ithout scoring by R ichardson, Bagshaw and L . G. W rig h t m ade runs, the form er being severe on the fast bowler, so th a t in 55 m inutes, despite W rig h t’s j slowness in scoring, 71 had been m ade w hen the 1 am ateur left. C hatterton played in faultless style, and Bagshaw w ent on h ittin g u n til a t 102 he returned a ba ll to Richardson, and retired fo r 70 m ade in eighty-five m inutes. A n oth e r stubborn resistance was offered b y Chatterton and D avidson, and 8*? runs in eighty-five m inutes were added before Lockw ood bow led the form er w ith a b a ll he d id not attem pt to play. S. H . W ood, an am ateur from Glossop, m ade b u t one stroke, a fou r, b u t Storer and D avidson looked lik e m akin g a stand, b u t Richardson going on at the gas w orks end bow led very finely, and D a v id son was dism issed fo r an excellent 67. for w hich he was b a ttin g tw o hours less five m inutes, and in w hich he h it tw o 5’s and seven 4’s. The in nin gs closed fo r 252, and of 240 from the bat three men m ade 181. R ich aid so n ’s last piece o f bow ling was 7 overs, 4 m aidens, 15 runs. 4 w ickets. O n Surrey going on, M . Read was out, lik e Sugg, before a ru n was scored, an d H ayw a rd and H o lla n d le ft at 15. Street and A b e l stayed together, b u t the latte r should have been taken by Bagshaw in the slips w hen he had m ade 20. S till, w hen p la y ceased for the day. Surrey had lost five w ickets fo r 91. O n F rid a y A b e l m ade h is score in to an in valu able 80, b u t no one else d id m uch ag ain st D avidson and Porter, and Surrey were 107 behind on the first in nin gs A b e l was battin g a ll through the in nin gs w ith the exception of one b all, and in tw o hours and fo rty m inutes, despite a m ediocre start, he played a capital saving game. Once again Sugg was out fo r 0, and W rig h t and Po rte r were both'out at 7, b u t Chatterton and B ag shaw as in the first in nin gs played be au tifu lly, and 128 were m ade fo r the fou rth w icket in hundred m inutes, w hen C hatterton was out fo r a b rillia n t 76 w h ich included ten 4’s, Bagshaw had been p layin g m ore slow ly, b u t w ith D avidson in , both men h it out ! an d 82 runs were m ade in seventy m inutes w hen Bagshaw le ft, stu pidly ru n nin g h im se lf out, for the same to tal as Chatterton ; he had been battin g three hours and a quarter. D avidson’s 62 in an h ou r-and- j a -h a lf was an excellent display, an d w hen p la y ceased, | D erbyshire were 346 runs on w ith fou r w ickets to fa ll, D u rin g the nigrht and n ext m orning m uch ra in fe ll, and the w ickets were pronounced u n tit fo r play, D erbyshire thus losing an excellent chance o f a victo ry w hich, on the play, they w e ll deserved. T h e ir fielding was about the best th a t has been seen this year, and com pared very favorably w ith Surrey’s, and though three m en were responsible fo r 391 runs o u t o f 467 from the bat, th e ir displays were o f the highest order. E . Sm ith and Ilu n te r, th e ir best team a t H u d dersfield v. Sussex, w ho played the same eleven w hich beat M iddlesex earlier in the week. The day’s play was rem arkable fo r the com plete retu rn to form of J . T . B row n, who, going in w ith the score a t 39 for tw o w ickets, resisted the Sussex attack for fo u r hours and a h alf, and was not o u t w hen pla y ceased fo r 168, h is largest in nin gs in first-class cricket. H is h ittin g was qu ite safe, and included strokes a ll round the w icket. H is best partnerships were w ith D enton, w ith w hom he p u t oa 95 in an hour an d .a quarter, and w ith M oorhouse, 121 being added w itho ut loss by the pa ir after the six th w icket had fa lle n a t 233. R a in kept the ground easy, and the bow lers could do b u t little w ith the b all. O n F rid a y a heavy dow npour pre vented play, and on Saturday, the w et w eather con tin u in g , the m atch was abandoned, the w et being as u n lu cky fo r Y o rk sh ire as fortunate for Surrey. N otts m ade no change from the side beaten by K e n t earlier in the week, b u t the M iddlesex team presented an u nusual appearance, M essrs. J . A ld rid g e, B . N . Bosw orth- Sm ith, and E. H - B ra y ta k in g the placts of M essrs. Ford , Scott, and M cG regor. O f these A ld rid g e was a w ell-know n M iddlesex am ateur under an assum ed nam e, B osw orth-Sm ith th e old H arrovia n now at O xford b u t n ot yet a blue, and B ray an old Carthusian who has n ot yet gained a place in the Cam bridge eleven. M id d le sex started very badly, Stoddart, H aym an, and B osw orth -S m ith a ll being out fo r eight runs. Then R a w lin w ith Lu cas m ade a useful stand, and 34 were p u t on fo r the fou rth w icket, R a w lin leaving a t 67 fo r 35 out of 59, a very capital in nin gs a t a pinch. O ’B rie n quite altered the position of affairs, h ittin g w ith great resolution, and. overcom ing the difficulties of the w icket, he m ade 62 out o f 100 in the sam s num ber o f m inutes. P h illip s stayed w ith h im fifty-five m inutes, scoring on ly five rim s, bu t his careful p la y was quite the correct course under the circum stances. A ld rid g e h it freely, and, w ith S ir Tim o th y, p u t on 44 for the seventh w icket in th irty - five m inutes. S till eight w ickets were down fo r 156, b u t W ebbe and B ray each m ade a valuable contribu tio n o f 39 to the score, th e ir partnership in an h ou r re alizin g 76 runs, and the in nin gs closed fo r 243. Shrew sbury and A . O. Jones scored 37 fo r N o ttin g h am shire’s first w icket, b u t were both out a t th at total, and Flow ers and W rig h t both failed, fou r w ickets being dow n fo r 49. G u nn and D a ft played out tim e and took the score to 70, b u t on F rid a y , m uch ra in h avin g falle n in the n ig h t, the w icket was soft and treacherous, and no stand could be m ade, H ea m e and R a w lin fin ish in g off the in nin gs fo r 109. N otts were 134 behind, and Shrew sbury could not b a t ow ing to an in ju re d hand. The second attem pt w as a m iserable failu re, M r. W rig h t alone reaching double figures, and, five m en not scoring, the venture w as over fo r 40 in an hou r an d ten m inutes. H earne and R a w lin , w i h the exception of one over, bow led through both innings, the latter, none too fortunate as a rule, w as credited w ith ten w ickets for 68, w h ilst H earne had nine fo r 73, the latte r reaching h is 100 w ickets th is season.
