Cricket 1895
290 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 25, 1895 sionals are S. Columba’s and the Campbell College ab Belfast. This absence of compe tent instruction, it goes without saying, is one of the greatest drawbacks to Irish cricket, and it certainly ought to bo removed, if the country is ever to turn out a good lot of cricketers.” ‘ ‘ Cricket is something of an exotic in Ireland ? ” “ I fear that the climate will always pre vent the development of cricket as a national pastime. Whenever we get a really dry season, as for example in 1893, at once there springs up a mushroom growth of small clubs which flourish for the season after a fashion, and then are heard of no more. Moreover, the game is not very popular, perhaps not well adapted to the Celtic temperament, and as the lower orders do not take to it it can not be played in the villages, where there are not enough men, who care for it, to form a team. Indeed, for some reason, the game has lately, to all appearance, been dying out in Ulster and Munster, though there are certainly signs of a revival in the West and also in some of the counties around Dublin.” “ Are the grounds good ? ” ‘ ‘ Not as a rule. The best grounds are in Dublin, in the Phoenix Park, where, how ever, no gate-money can be charged. The other Dublin grounds are very bad, and those in the country are not in any way satis factory.” • “ Then it is remarkable that cricket is played at all in Ireland ? ” “ The presence of regiments with capable cricketers amongst the officers and men keeps it alive, partly, but there are a good many native players in Dublin and the counties adjacent, who play for the University and for the Dublin clubs. It is ver)r rarely that a good player comes from any other part of the country. There is no great interest taken in the game by the great mass of the people as there is in England, and, of course, there are few, if any, professionals. There is not any career open to the man who cannot afford to play the game purely as an amateur, and as there are no gates the sport is rather expensive.” ‘ ‘ As there is little rustic cricket in Ireland, I suppose you cannot give me any illustra tions of peasantry humour touching the game, or any Hibernian decisions of umpires ? ’ ’ “ I have played very little rustic cricket, indeed, very little exists. But in the Phoenix Park the other day the following conversation was overheard, and will perhaps show the cricket level of the Irish working man as oompared with his English compeer, who is reckoned an average critic at the Oval, and with good reason :— ‘ I was a fine cricketer oncet meself.’ ‘ Indeed ! Was it a bat ye were ?* ‘ No, I was never anything to spaik of.’ ‘ Thin ye were a bowler ? ’ ‘ No, I never could be much to bowl or catch.’ ‘ Thin what could ye do ?’ ‘ Sure, I was a divil to run ! ’ ” This was quite good enough to finish with, so I bothered Mr. Gwynn with no more questions ; but it is a disappointment to learn that it is improbable that we may see him more frequently on this side of the water. At cricket his score of bO at the Oval the other day was one of the best examples we have had this year of steady defence and finished batting; and at BLackheath, when the Irish fifteen of 1893-94 outplayed the English Rugby champions, and won the first place for Ireland among the nations, he on several occasions showed that he also was ‘ *a divil to lun.” Our portrait is from a photograph by bymmons&Thiele,60,ChanceryLane,London.
