W a rd m ade 64 by very fine cricket, b u t h is d isp la y is overshadow'ed by M aclaren and P a u l, each o f w hom fa r surpassed th eir previous best. P a u l was b a ttin g three hours an d teD m inutes, and h is 177 in clud ed a s ix an d th irty 4’s ; he gave no chance d u rin g th is great perform ance. M a c­ laren ’s is the highest score on record. H e was battin g a ll day on M on day, and fo r tw o an d a quarter h ours on Tuesday. H e m igh t, perhaps, have been caught when 262, b u t h is 424 w as a m agnificent score, and included one 6, sixty-tw o 4’s, eleven 3’s, thirty-seven 2’8, and sixty-th ree singles. T h is is, of course, by fa r the h igh est score in a first-class m atch, and re­ places as a record M r. W . G. G race’s 344, m ade at Canterbury on A u g u st 11,1876. M a clare n w as a t the w ickets in a ll fo r seven hours and fifty m inutes, and, had he received the support th a t m ig h t have been expected, Lan cash ire’s to ta l w o u ld pro bab ly have reached 1,000. A s it was, the in n in g s closed fo r 801, 2 runs less th an the to tal o f the Sm okers v.
