J u l y 18, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY REC0RD OF THE GAME. 283 MIDDLESEX SUSSEX. The w icke t a t L o rd ’s was fast b u t rather fiery and the fast b o w lin g kicked up ra th er aw kw ardly in the early stages o f th is m atch com m enced last M onday. Each side w as w ell represented, C. B . F ry appearing in the Sussex eleven. T he early battin g gave little prom ise o f a lon g score, R a w lin getting rid o f W ilson at seven, and in spite o f M a rlo w staying w ith R a n jic- sin h ji w h ile 46 were m ade for the second w icket, three men were o u t fo r 70. B u t on F ry jo in in g the In dia n Prince, a fine e xh ib ition o f cricke t ensued and in an hour and ten m inutes no few er th an 117 runs were scored, F r y ’s share being 43. R a n jitsin h ji com pleted his hundred in a little over tw o hours, and h is splen did in nin gs o f 110, w hich included sixteen 4’s, occupied in a ll tw o hours and a h alf. A fte r he le ft a t 207, w ickets fe ll qu ickly, and nine had fallen fo r 234, when H ilto n le n t B ra n n such excellent assistance th a t 51 were p u t on in fo rty m inutes for the last partnership. M iddlesex going in against 285 fared very badly, Tate bow ling w ith rem arkable effect, h is record up to the close o f p la y being 82 balls, 43 runs, and six w ickets. H aym an an d M acgregor alone played the bow ling w ith confidence, m ost of the m en shaping very badly, and bu t fo r a stand by F . G. J . Fo rd , the to tal w ould have been very sm all. O n Tuesday, he w ith H . J. W ebbe and H earne added 32 runs, bu t M iddlesex were 166 to the bad on the first hands. Fo llo w in g on, a m uch better show was made, Stoddart and H aym an m aking 47 fo r the first w icket, b u t when the crack bat w ent a t 57 things looked very black for M iddlesex, Lucas and M acgregor however to ok the score, by not over good cricket, to 99, and F o rd and the latte r, who played m uch better as his in nin gs progressed, m ade a m ost u sefu l stand, F o rd pla yin g in h is best form w ith ease and confidence. T he arrears had ju st been h it off w hen M acgregor w as o u t fo r an invaluable 55. and for aw hile the gam e turned against M iddlesex. Ford, O ’Brien, Scott, and R a w lin , a ll being out fo r 208, M iddlesex then being 42 ahead w ith tw o w ickets to fa ll. P h illip s and W ebbe, however, quite changed the aspect of the m atch, the professional battin g w ith great care, the captain playin g in adm irable style. So 98 runs were added when P h illip s was u n lu ck ily ru n out, and H earne fa ilin g . W ebbe carried out h is bat for 61, m ade in one hundred m inutes, w ith one chance at the sta rt o f h is otherw ise fau ltless innings. Sussex were set 148 to win, and lost W ils o n and M a rlo w for 17, b u t R a n jitsin h ji and M u rdoch added 50 w itho ut fu rth er loss. Yesterday, M u rdoch was out fo r 20, and no one b u t the In dia n played w ith any pluck. H is b a ttin g was a pleasure to w itness, and w hen he left, though B u tt and Bean failed, B rau n proved equal to the occasion, and Sussex won afcer an exciting gam e by tw o w ickets.
