A lth o u g h L o rd H aw ke, F . S. Jackson and H u n te r were a ll absent from the Y o rk sh ire eleven a t Sheffield on M onday, w h ilst Leicestershire were nearly fu ll strength, yet the Y o rk ists established a strong lead on the first day’s play. T he Leicestershire batsm en fo r the m ost p art faile d badly, though D e T ra fford h it freely, and Pougher was an hour a t the wic kets for 22. Peel and H irs t bow led very finely in the after noon and each had a good analysis. The w icket was good, and there was no excuse fo r the Leicestershire failu res, as was show n w hen Y o rk sh iie w ent in. B row n w as misi-ed in the slips when he had scored b u t one, b u t then he and T u n n icliffe h it in fine style, and in an h ou r and fifty m inutes passed th e ir opponents score by 5 ru n s before the latte r was out. H is 62 had eig h t 4’s, and B row n ’s 72 ten, both h avin g played a good forcin g innings. D enton and M o o r house follow ed up the good beginning by adding 73 in the last h a lf hour w ith o u t fu rth er loss. O n Tues day, D enton was out in the first over, b u t W a in w rig h t and M oorhouse took the score to 293, the latte r then leaving for an excellent aud fau ltless 75, w hich in clud ed tw elve 4’s. W a in w rig h t and Peel m ade another good stand, and 83 m ore were p u t on, w hen the form er who had been ba tting 95 m inutes le ft fo r a splendid 74. Peel’ s 55 occupied an hour, an d was also w ith o u t f a u lt : he was o u t a t 409. In h is 44 n ot o u t H irs t gave tw o chances, b u t played fine cricket, and th e Leicestershire m en were set 349 to save the in nin gs defeat. W ith one exception a ll the Y o rk sh ire batsm en obtained double figures, though no one exceeded the century. T h e ir opponents, against P eel and W a in w rig h t they never looked like saving the ga m e ; in fact, excepting H o lla n d and Geeson, no one reached a h ig h er score th an 11. W a in w rig h t got a lo t o f w o rk on the b a ll and was alm ost unplayable, h is six w ickets costing b u t 26 runs, w h ile in the w hole m atch he had eig h t fo r 46. R a in fe ll in the m id d le of the day, and the state of the w icke t no doubt assisted the Y o rk sh ire bowlers, b u t Leicestershire’s d isp lay was very feeble. Th e b ig county w on by an in n in g s and 256 runs. Score and a n a ly sis:— L eicestershire . F irs t In n ing s. M r. C.
