Cricket 1895

J uly 18, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE CAME 279 LIVERPOOL AND DISTRICT v. CAM BRIDGE UNIVERSITY. The first day’s p la y in th is m atch commenced on the A y b u rth G round, Live rp o o l, last Thursday, was m uch interfered w ith by rain , b u t startin g play after luncheon, Cam bridge had, before rain stopped play at ten m inutes to six , am assed 252 runs, and lost but four w ickets. Th e credit fo r th is perform ance was chiefly due to M r. F ra n k M itch e ll, w ho was a t the w icket a ll the afternoon, and 151 not o u t a t the finish. C. J. B urnu p , who played in place o f N . F . D ruce, who was assisting the G entlem en a t the O val, helped h im to p u t on 88 runs fo r the fo u rth w icket after three had falle n fo r 31, and M a rrio tt and he scored 133 before p la y w as adjourned. O n F rid a y , M itch e ll added only 4 ru n s to h is score. H is 151 was m ade in three hours and a h alf, and though he gave tw o chances in one over after scoring 100, he played really splendid cricket. There were 23 boundary h its in his innings. A fte r h is departure the Cam bridge batsm en continued to score w ell, W . G . D ru ce w ith 58, a stylish in nin gs in clud in g eia-ht 4’s, and B u rrough, who was not out, d istin gu ish in g them selves most. W ith 403 against them , the Live rp o o l batsm en failed com pletely, on ly tw o gainin g double figures, and the whole side poing dow n before W ilso n and G ray for 47. Follow in g on 356 in arrears, the Liverpu dlians lost a w icket a t 12, bu t A . T . K em ble, the old Lan ca shire w icket-keeper, and T . A in sco ug h m ade a good stand, the form er’s 59 in clu d in g a 6 and seven 4’s. S till, when tim e arrived, 234 runs were w anted w ith five w ickets to fa ll. O n Saturday, despite a good stand by Sharpe and J . A in scoug h, w ho scored 43 for the seventh partnership, it never seemed probable that the one in nin gs defeat w ould be avoided, and, in fact, when the la st w icket fe ll fo r 184, Cam bridge had won very easily by an innings and 172 runs. The re su lt o f th is m atch, even m ore fu lly than of the In te r-V a rsity contest, had been discounted by plenty of am ateur prophets, and though the pre diction n ine tim es out of ten w ould probably be verified, yet on F rid a y and Saturday last, even the advantage o f an extra h alf-h ou r’s p la y d id n ot suffice to allow the favourites to w in. L o rd ’s, du rin g the course of the m atch, should, fu rth er, have been com paratively deserted, fo r the G eneral Ele ctio n had, it was said, taken Society o u t o f to w n ; an d m any people w ho w a it fo r the E to n and H arro w m atch in ordinary years, had been on ly too w illin g th is season to cu rta il th eir stay in London. Y e t the scene on the ground was of the usual b rillia n t description, and even in num bers there was little sign of d im in u tion. E to n had seven o ld choices, and also Robertson, who last year d id so w ell against W inchester, though he did n ot find a place in the regu lar team . H arrow on the other hand had bu t fo u r old colours and had to p la y w ith o u t th e ir captain, Gore, the best m an in the school. W h e n E to n h ad w on the toss a very large score was expected, and the 260 obtained h ard ly approached the m ore sanguine anticipations. The chief cause of E to n ’s rather m edium display, fo r of th e 260 the huge proportion o f fo rty were extras, was the bo w lin g of Dowson, son o f the old Surrey cricketer of th a t nam e, who is ju s t fifteen, and came up from Elstree w ith a big reputation. H e took five w ickets in the first in nin gs lo r 90 and disposed of Pilkin g ton , the E to n ia n crack, for a sm all score. The best batting on the E ton ia n s side was th a t of Chinnery, w ho in the first in nin gs w ent in first and was fifth out for 75 a t 138, m ade iu an hour an d fifty m inutes, and in the second in nin gs m ade 64 out of 115 in a n htfur and a quarter for the first w icket. A ; B . L u b b o ck’s second in nin gs was a very w ell played exh ibition , b u t he d id n ot do w e ll in h is first attem pt. Robertson w ith 58 for once out (and then ru n out) quite justified h is selection, b u t so fa r as battin g is con cerned P ilk in g to n . the captain, was n )t the expected success, h is 1:< and 28 being only m oderate; no uoubt he had an off-day. In b ow lin g 'he d id better ta k in g , eig h t w ickets in aU fo r 108 runs. H arrow ’s first show was probably as m uch above th e ir average f<»rm as th eir second was below it. F a r in advance of everything else was J . H . Stogdon’s 124. H e was b atting fo r tw o hours and fifty-five m inutes and gave b u t one chance, an easy one to Chinnery when 36 H is h ittin g was m arked by great power, and he drove partic u la rly w ell; he w ent in first w icket dow n and was fifth out. W ith M atthew s he pu t on 75 and w ith Craw ley 74. T he last-nam ed played a capital in nin gs o f 78 in a hundred and five m inutes, in clud in g eleven 4’s, and he is evidently a w orthy m em ber o f th a t ilk . N in e m en bow led in H a rro w ’s first innings, a rath er over-liberal supply. In th eir second innings fou r were found sufficient to dism iss nine of them fo r a poor score o f 75, only M a w and Stogdon exceeding 20, seven m en not scoring at a ll, though tw o o f these were the not outs who ju s t m anaged to keep th eir w ickets up to the stroke of seven, H arrow , w ith a w icket in hand being 142 behind. There was con siderable enthusiasm at the close, E to n very nearly succeeding in w in n in g the gam e, the seventh, eighth, and n in th p ick e ts a ll fa llin g at 75. N o-b alls and wides were very prevalent on the H arrow side, th e ir bowlers g iv in g E to n eight of the form er and sixteen of the latter, w h ilst the extras allow ed by the Eton ian s were, w ith the exception o f one w ide, confined to byes. H ow ever, in the fo u r in nin gs there were ninety-three extras ou t of 944 runs. Score and a n a lysis: E ton . F irs t Innings. Second Innings. A . B .
