PLAYERS. T hough neither side was representative, ow ing to eight of the leading counties being engaged, yet strong team s 1-ad been selected by the Surrey execu tive, and the reappearance o f George Loh m an n in th is m atch, comm enced at the O val last T h ursday, could n ot fa il to im p a rt to it a special and w idely fe lt in terest. Three days’ fu ll cricket were played, and in the end the gam e was a draw , 1,062 runs being scored, and the Players at the close w antin g 29 runs to win, w ith five w ickets to fa ll. The first in nin gs of the G entlem en occupied th e hours and a quarter, the rate o f scoring being alm ost exactly one ru n a m inute. T he gam e was rath er tam e at the start, and no great disp lay had been m ade when the fou rth w icket fe ll a t 91. Th en L . H . G w ynn, the Irishm an who has played so w e ll th is season, and C. B . F ry became pirtn e rs, and in an h ou r and a h a lf p u t on 133 runs. F ry p la yin g in b rig h t and vigorous form , an d his 71 in clu d in g ten 4’s. G w ynn, who had gone in first w icket down, w as out six th w hen he had scored 80, th ro w ing aw ay h is w icket over a short run. H e was b a ttin g for three hours and tw enty m inutes, and, though he m ig h t have been caught w hen 62, he yet played a really fine inDings. W . W . Read was badly h it on the hand by H ayw a rd when 16, and had to retire from the gam e, a great loss to h is side, and the rem ainder of the in nin gs was notew orthy only fo r a good stand by H . Leveson-G ow er and D . L . A . Jephson, who played in place of K . S. R a n jitsin h ji, w ho was unable to p la y a t the la st m om ent. F ifty-five runs were added fo r the n in th w icket by these m en, an d both were a t la st dism issed by Lohm ann, who had been unsuccessful earlier in the innings. Though ra in fe ll in the n ight, the w icket on F rid a y , when the Players w ent in , had by no means suffered, and there was m uch disappointm ent when A b e l returned a ball to F ry , and was ou t fo r 3. Th e second w icket fe ll a t 36, and then W a lte r Q u aife and H ayw a rd in an hour p u t on 62, the latte r not being in h is best form . Q uaife, however, played a capital innings, being fifth out a t 132 fo r 55, fo r w hich he had played, for tw o hours and a quarter, correct b u t ratht r slow cricket. L ille y aud Loh m an n were then together, and en livened the gam e, a lte r a flu k y sta rt o f th e ir p artner ship, by some fine h ittin g , 30 runs com ing iD a quarter o f an hour, and 50 in tw enty-five m inutes. In a ll they were together fo r an hour, and the score had been increased by 96, when Loh m an n was o u t for 47, a w ell-played in nin gs. L ille y w ent on h ittin g, and m ade the top score fo r h is side, h is 74 occupying one hundred m inutes, and containing seven 4’s and six 3’s. The other w ickets fe ll q u ick ly to H illy a rd , and the Gen tlem en were 28 ahead on the first innings. In their second attem pt M u rd och and B ain bridg e played good bu t qu iet cricket, and in an h ou r and three-quarters 71 had been scored w ith o u t loss, w hen Lohm ann b rillia n tly caught the form er, and R a w lin dism issed L . H . <jwynn before he had scored. O n Saturday B ain bridg e raised h is score to 82, a very good innings, fo r w hich he batted three hours and a h alf, w ith only one chance a t 71, b u t no one else m ade a large score, and the Players were le ft w ith 254 to w in, and three hours and a quarter to get them . A b e l again fjile d , b u t M a rlo w played fine cricket. W ith H ayw a rd he p u t on 137 runs fo r the th ird w icket in tw o hours, an d was a t last out fo r exactly 100, fo r w hich he was ba tting tw o hours and a h alf, h is first century in a G entlem en v. Players’ gam e. T he draw was, o f course, a ll in favou r o f the Players, w ho ju st tied the G entlem en’s second score in th e ir incom plete innings, but, considering the m oderate bow ling opposed to them , the professionals m ig h t have been expected to p u ll off the m atch. George Loh m an n ’s was a very satisfactory reappearance, as he m ade 58 fo r once out, an d took fo u r w ickets fo r 66 runs. Score and analysis :— G entlem en . F irs t Innings. Second Innings.
