A rth u r Shrews­ bury again appeared fo r h is county, and showed him self s till as good as ever. G oin g in first, he was seventh out a t 270 fo r 143, for w hich he had been batting fou r hours an d tw enty m inutes w ith a ll his old elegance, and had given no chance w hich came to hand. F o r the th ird partn ersh ip Flow ers and he pu t on 57 runs in fo rty m inutes, and w ith A tte w e ll in three-quarters o f an hour Shrew sbury m ade 56, h is own share being 32, so th at, h is in nin gs in clud in g nineteen 4’s, he cannot be reproached w ith slow scoring. C a rlin and D aft, after eig h t w ickets had fa lle n fo r 287, pu t on 48 m ore w ith o u t loss, and a t the end o f the day’s play N otts had m ade 335 an d s till h ad tw o w ickets to fa ll. O n F rid a y 28 runs were added before the innings closed. D a ft’s 74 w as thoroughly w ell played, and in h is stay of tw o hours and th irty-five m inutes he gave no chance. R a in h ad falle n in the night, and the w icket was by no m eans im proved thereby, as D erbyshire found, tw o m en being disposed of for 5 runs, and a fu rth e r m isfortune be fell in L . G. W rig h t being ru n out fo r an im possibly short one. Chatterton an d D avidson p u t on 41 fo r the fou rth wicket, when bad ju dgm ent in ru n n in g lost the latter’s w icket, an d to r the six th partnership C hatter­ ton and Sugg added 46. C hatterton’s 91 was a splendid in nin gs, m ade w hen lu ck was against the side, he was b a ttin g three hours less ten m inutes. Follow ing on 209 behind, D erbyshire, in three- quarters o f an hou r le ft fo r play, fared very badly, losing tw o w ickets for 24 ; b u t on Saturday, when the wicket appear*, d to have recovered from the rain , and Porter and L . G . W rig h t continued the innings, a very good disp lay was m ade, for, though the am ateur left a t 36, Porter, who is not reckoned upon fo r m any runs, h it finely, and w ith Chatterton soored 136 runs in an hour and fifty m inutes. Chatterton le ft a t 172, his faultless 57 in clud in g eight 4’s, and Porter was fifth out a t 186, o f w hich he had m ade ju s t h a lf in two hours and tw enty m inutes. Storer and D avidson follow ed the exam ple of th e ir fellow professionals, and in seventy m inute* 85 runs were p u t on fo r the sixth w icket, both playin g w e ll, bu t S. H . Evershed scored his 80 at the rate of one a m inute, in a partner­ ship of 123 w ith Storer fo r the eighth w icket. T h is m atch, in w hich the w estern county had b u t a poor team , was begun a t B risto l la st Th u rsday on an excellent w icket. Lancashire began w ith fa ir success and 104 runs, o f w hich W a rd m ade 39 in h is best style in an h ou r and fifty m inutes, were scored fo r tw o w ickets. Then in the next forty m inutes fo u r m ore m en were out and on ly 25 runs were added to the score. B ake r and Lancaster p u t another appearance on affairs and in an h ou r 77 ru n s were m ade, B ake r then being out fo r 66, a very b rillia n t innings, for w hich he was a t the w icket one hundred m inutes and w hich included eleven 4’s. T he to ta l was 273, of w hich the last fou r w ickets realized 144. Gloucester­ shire lo st one w icket on T h u rsday fo r 22, b u t on the n ext day B oard and R ice played capital cricket and th e ir partnership resulted in 68 runs, B o a rd ’s excellent 53 ta k in g h im n ine ty m inutes to m ake. Three w ickets fe ll q u ick ly and 100 w as the to tal for five, when Captain L u a rd joined W .G . Grace. L u a rd was tw ice let off w hen three an d w hen seven, b u t then settled down, and 74 were added in sixty-five m inutes before Grace was out fo r 39, a steady and faultess display of one hundred m inutes’ duration. L u a rd m ade 71 in exactly the same tim e, b u t the last three batsm en faile d and Gloucestershire were le ft 46 behind. W a rd and P a u l opened Lan cash ire’s second innings in good style, b u t w hen the first w icket fe ll for 50 in fifty-five m inutes, F e rris bow led in rem ark­ able form , and very soon fo u r m ore w ickets were dow n and the score was bu t 62. B enton and T in sle y stayed together aw hile, bu t a t the close of p la y six w ickets were dow n fo r 87. O n Saturday the pitch had w orn and runs were h ard to get, the fo u r outstanding Lancashire w ickets re alizin g b u t 33 runs. Gloucester­ shire were le ft w ith 167 to get to w in, and started in good style, G race an d Rice m akin g 42 for the first w icket, w hen M o ld again dism issed th e cham pion. R ice played a very fine in nin gs and tried h ard to w in the game, for h is 42 he was a t the w icket three hours and a quarter, a m ost patient and carefu l display, b u t despite some h ittin g by B racher and D e W in to n , the rem aining batsm en were very easily g o t rid of, and the score a t the fa ll of the last w icket was 12 behind the Lan cash ire aggregate, ce rta inly a disappointing display. B u t, to the play. N eith e r side was fu lly represented, b u t each had a strong team . G oin g in first, Som ersetshire batted very unequally, fo u r m en scoring 201 out of 240 from the bat. T h is to ta l seemed very m uch ou t o f the question w hen the six th w icke t fe ll for 93, b u t R . Porch, w ith an excellent 85 not out, out o f 206 w h ilst at the w icket fo r tw o hours and tw enty-five m inutes, T yle r, and the old-tim e w icket-keeper, F . T . W elm an, batted so w e ll th a t Som ersetshire appeared to have done fa irly w e ll. B u t the e xcitin g p a rt of the d ay’s p la y came in the tw o hours and a quarter le ft for play, Carpenter, the young Essex professional, in th a t tim e scoring no few er than 135 n otou t, out of 224. O n F rid a y he m ade h is to ta l 153, and was then ru n out, bu t he had given chances w hen 48 and when 143. H e was ba ttin g , in all, tw o hours and th irty-five m inutes, and scored a 5 and tw enty-five 4’s. M cG ahey scored 147, b u t occupied an hour and five m inutes longer than Carpenter. A . P . Lu cas played the best cricket of the m atch, and m ade no m istake in a great in nin gs o f 135, w hich in clud ed a 6 and eighteen 4’s. Russell, who m issed h is hundred by one n m , was b atting tw o hours and h it very freely. Essex’s to tal o f 692 was by fa r th eir best score, and ranked th ird in a county m atch. O n F rid a y evening, Som ersetshire lost a w icket fo r 38 runs, L . P a la ire t pla yin g w ell, b u t after he had been dism issed fo r 31 on Saturday m orning, only J . E. T ra sk an d S. M . J . W oods m ade any show against K o rtrig h t and M ead, of w hom the form er had the good record fo r the m atch o f eleven w ickets fo r 115. Essex w on by an in nin gs and 317 runs, a very h ollow victory, and one w hich should do the eastern county an im m ense am ount of good.
