D avidson an d S torer were aw ay from the hom e eleven and Peel and F . S. Jackson from Y o rk ­ shire, a ll ta k in g p a rt in the b ig m atch a t L o rd ’s. G. G . W a lke r, in ju red , was also out o f the D erbyshire ■ eleven, w h ilst B row n , w ho has been unsuccessful of late was, a t his ow n w ish, allow ed a rest by Y o rk ­ shire. W in n in g the toss. L o rd H aw k e ’s eleven m ade a very good show, nine of them gettin g double figures, though no one exceeded th e century, in an in nin gs of 322. O ne o f the best perform ances was th a t of F ra n k M itch e ll, w ho m ade 38 o u t o f 95 in the seventy m inutes he was batting, an d w ith D enton p u t on 72 *or‘ second w icket. T h e latte r’s 65, the highest and best in n in g s on the side, occupied h im tw o hours and five m inutes, he, a t 24, played a b a ll on the groui.d w hich rolled in to the w icket w ith o u t rem oving th e bails. Lan caster and L o rd H aw ke fo r the six th partn ersh ip in fifty-three m inutes p u t on 65 runs. Th e form er, m issed when 13, played w ell for h is 51, the best th in g he has yet done fo r Y o rk sh ire , and L o rd H aw ke ’s 41 was a very b rig h t and attractive in n in g s. F . W . M illig a n an d H aig h , of H uddersfield an d Pe rth , also scored w ell. H . Evershed quite altered the aspect o f the g'tm e, and 100 runs w ere added in fifty m inutes, an d in an hour-and-three quarters w hen the am ateur w as out fo r a b rillia n t 112 . the total was ju st double h is in d iv id u a l score, and 190 had been obtained du rin g the partnership. B agshaw did even better, fo r though no one stayed long w ith h im he had m ade 127 w hen the last w icke t fell, h is first century fo r h is county ; he w as b a ttin g three hou rs-an d-a-h alf and gave a chance w hen 48. Evershed and Bagshaw m ade 239, the other nine batsm en 41. In Y o rk sh ire ’ ssecond in n ­ ing*. w hich they com m enced ten on, though T u n n i­ cliffe scored fa irly w ell, the ch ief success of the earlier crick e t was M itch e ll’s 63. H e was tw ice m issed in one over w hen only tw o, b u t then fo r tw o hours played fine cricket. A fte r he left, s ix th out a t 129, L o rd H aw ke and H irs t m ade a most, valu ab le stand, keeping th e ir w ickets up to the closing of p la y and ad d in g 44 runs. Y esterday, the stand was continued u n til 80 had been added to the to tal w hen H irs t was out. L o rd H aw ke com pleted h is 50, b u t a t 253 he and M illig a n both left. T he la st w icket realized 62 runs, H a ig h and H u n te r p la yin g good cricket. D erbyshire had 326 set them to w in, an alm ost im possible task. B ag sh aw again played splendid cricket, b u t Evershed failed. M r. L . J . W rig h t and C hatterton played w e ll in th e ir partnerships w ith Bagshaw , bu t M illig a n ’s bow ling tu rned the scale in favou r of Y o ilcsh ire , who fin a lly w on by 171 runs. Tw o w ickets had falle n fo r 17 when the first-nam ed p a ir kep t together one hundred m inutes and added 108 runs, w hen W a rd was u n lu ck ily run out, his 63 in clu d ed e ig h t 4’s. Studd was batting two hours an d ra quarter, and though he played a rather cram ped game w hen approaching 100, and was bowled w hen 7 short, h is in nin gs fo r the greater p a rt showed the m ost correct and sty lish cricket. H is partnership w ith Lacey yielded 70 runs. D r. B e n craft and Soar m ade a useful stand of 36 fo r the eighth w icket. Sussex lost G . L . W ilso n from the first b a ll of the innings, b u t then K . S. R a n jitsin h ji played in his very best style, h ittin g m ost b rillia n tly , so th a t 81 were scored w ith o u t fu rth er loss before the close of p lay, of w hich the In d ia n prince claim ed no fewer th an 64. 38 runs were added on Tuesday before R a n jitsin h ji was stum ped fo r 83, m ade in eighty m inutes, in clu d in g fifteen 4’s. M u rdoch and M ar.ow pla ye d very fine cricket, and p u t on 36 for the th ird w icket, when the latte r was o u t fo r a capital 57. W icke ts then fe ll qu ickly, and the on ly notew orthy feature o f the later cricket w as a good stand fo r 38 by M r. A rlin g to n and H ilto n fo r the n in th w icket. H am psh ire had a lead o f 8 runs on the first innings, b u t began th e ir second attem pt badly, three good w ickets going fo r 47. R . A . Studd and W ebb, how ­ ever, by careful cricke t then added 69, before Studd was o u t fo r a patient and w e ll played 37, which occupied h im an hou r and a quarter. W ebb was out a t 126, h is 45 being a m ost welcom e contribution, and then Lacey and Soar added 23, pla yin g o u t tim e. Y esterday the not-outs scored a t a great pace, and p u t on 98 in an hour. Soar was then out, the partner­ ship h avin g yielded 121 runs in an hour and a half. L ace y and B e n craft brought u p the th ird century, bu t tw o runs later the form er was out fo r 94, m ade in three hours and a h alf. The in nin gs was closured when nine w ickets were dow n fo r 357, leaving Sussex three hours and a h a lf to get 366, a very severe task even a t H ove. M a rlo w and W ilso n were disposed of cheaply, tw o w ickets fa llin g fo r 20. Then R a n jit­ sin h ji scored freely, m akin g 41 out o f 64 w h ilst he was a t the w icket. M urdoch and N ew ham were partners a t 84, and defied a ll efforts o f the H am p­ shire bow lers to p a rt them , rem ain ing together till stum ps were draw n, w ith the to ta l a t 258 fo r three, th e ir partnership adding no few er than 174 runs to Sussex’s total, the m atch thus ended in a draw .
