Cricket 1895
266 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J l y I U 1895. A new edition of a Tourist Guide to the Continent, edited by Percy Lindley, in whom I presume to recognise the Notts Forest footballer and cricketer, claims attention. It is written in free and easy style, and is as little like the conventional guide book as possible. In fact, for uselessness and complexity, it can in no way compete with the regulation article. It is quite a new sensation to find a guide book which is in any sense a guide, but Mr. Lindley quite assumes the triple rAle of guide, philosopher, and friend. J f troubles como not as single spies, it may perhaps be said of cricket that the good scores often come in battalions. An instance of the curiosities of run-getting was furnished this week in the person of the great W . G. himself. As the D aily News of yesterday points out, it is nine teen years since The Master made a hundred for the Gentlemen against the Players at Lord’s. To make the contrast more pronounced, it may be stated that his 118 for the Gentlemen this week is the fifth score of a hundred recorded to him on the ground of the Marylebone Club during the present season.
