J uly l l , 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE U \ME. 263 SUSSEX v. YORKSHIRE. F o r the first tim e since Ju ly , 1880, a county m atch was commenced a t H astin gs on T h u rsd ay last. B oth ^ides were strong, B ra n n for Sussex and E rn est Sm ith for Y o rk sh ire being the on ly noticeable absen tees. Sussex began none too w ell, tw o wickets fa llin g fo r 21, bu t R a n jitsin h ji and M u rdoch then p u t on 76 rim s in forty-five m inutes by free an d good cricket, each givin g one chance in the course o f h is innings. W ickets then fe ll so fa st th a t nine m en were out fo r 142. H um phreys and Tate, however, m ade a m ost S lu cky stand an d in the end the to ta l reached 189. [urdoch and H um p hreys each received in ju rie s w hich made it necessary fo r substitutes to field for them , indeed, the latte r retired from the m atch altogether, w hile the A n g lo -A u stra lia n was o u t for n il in the second in nin gs. Y o rk sh ire began w e ll w ith Jackson and B row n w ho m ade 53 fo r the first w icket, when both were out. D enton d id little fo r once, bu t T u n nicliffe and Lan caster in the la st forty-five m inutes of play added 46 w ith o u t loss, and on F rid a y m orning 16 more, when th e y both le ft a t 125. T u n n icliffe ’s 45 occupied n inety m inutes and was a fau ltless d i play. W a in w rig h t played a forcing in nin gs and gave a hard chance when 32, b u t h is 46 was a m ost useful con tri bution. L o rd H aw ke and M oorhouse for the eighth w icket m ade 43, and in the end Y o rk sh ire had a good lead. Sussex soon h it off the arrears— 68—w ith the loss o f M a rlo w ’s w icket, b u t a t 69 W ilso n was out, the second w icket h avin g added 52 in forty-five m inutes. R a n jitsin h ji then found no one to stay w ith him , bu t went on p la yin g the m ost stylish cricket. H e was a t length out a t 150 fo r 74, m ade in tw o hours-and-a- quarter w itho ut a bad stroke, and showed perfeet defence, w h ile h ittin g h ard as m ay be seen from the fact th a t he sent the b a ll to the boundary fo u r teen tim es. In H um phreys’ absence the in nin gs term inated fo r 178. Y o rksh ire w anting 111, had fifteen m inutes’ ba tting on F rid a y evening, and scored 18 w ith o u t loss, and on Saturday, though B row n was o u t w itho ut any addition. Jackson and Tu n n icliffe obtained a com plete m astery over the bow ling, and in less th an an hour b y some very b ril lia n t h ittin g knocked off the runs, Y o rk sh ire w in n in g by niQe w ickets. K . S. R a n jitsin h ji was the hero of the m atch, scoring 59 and 74, and follow in g W . G. Grace and A b e l in the com pletion o f 1,000 runs th is season, thus distancing in this feat S. M . J. WARWICKSHIRE. A t Liverpo ol, on Thursday last, the on ly Lancashire home m atch not played a t O ld Trafford was com menced. W a rw icksh ire were w ith o u t M r. L . C. Docker, and gave a tria l to M r. A . L . N elson, of Leam ington, w ho by the w ay scored in neither innings. The w icket was soft and the ground dead, so that W a rw icksh ire d id w ell in scoring 206 in th e ir first attem pt. M r. H . W . B ain b rid g e and W . Q uaife started w ell, m akin g 49 for the first w icket in fo rty- five m inutes and then the brothers Q u aife in seventy m inutes registered 43 m ore. W a lte r Q uaife’s 48 occupied h im tw o hours and w as played w itho ut a chance. S a n ta ll and M r. J. E . H ill in forty-five m inutes p u t on 46 runs, and in fifty m inutes G lover and P a lle tt m ade 34. There w as some curiously level scorin g: 28, 25, 25, 25, 21, and 19 being the contribu tions of six m en. Lancashire began very badly, losing W ard, P a u l, and Sugg for 15 ru n s, a shocking start from w hich they never recovered. O n F rid a y , B ake r and Tinsley fo r the fou rth w icke t m ade 52, and the form er, who was six th out a t 97, played an excellent innings of 43. M r. C. H . B enton played w e ll fo r h is 21 n otout, b u t Lancashire were 72beh in d on the first innings. W arw icksh ire at the second tim e o f asking exceeded th e ir first score by 3 runs. The chief credit fo r this was due to the brothers Q u aife and L ille y . W a lte r Q uaife, who m ade 42 o u t o f 64 in sixty-five m inutes, again played fine cricket, b u t W . G. Q uaife and L ille y gave the best d isplay in the m atch. These m en in eighty m inutes added 110 runs for the fou rth partnership, and of these L ille y claim ed 72, m ade up o f fourteen 4’s, a 3, tw o 2’s, and nine singles. W . G. Q uaife was b a ttin g three hours less ten m inutes for 66, an excellent innings. M o ld , a t first unsuccessful, bow led finely a t the close o f th e day, ta k in g five w ickets in eleven overs fo r 5 runs, W a rw icksh ire then being 279 runs on w ith a w icket to fa ll. 12 runs were added on Saturday an d Lan cash ire were thus set 292 to w in. A lb e rt W a rd m ade a fine attem pt to accom plish the task, and 150 were scored fo r the first five w ickets when he le ft fo r an excellent 77, for w h ich he was batting three hours and ten m inutes. B riggs and P aul gave h im good support, b u t after he left, the gam e w ent a ll against Lan ca shire, the last five w ickets fa llin g for the ad dition of 23 runs. S an ta ll out-rivalled M o ld ’s feat in a piece o f bow ling a t the close of the innings, ta king five w ickets and h avin g only three ru n s h it from h im in forty-tw o balls.
