Cricket 1895

262 CRICKET. A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 11, 1895. OXFORD v . CAMBRIDGE. T he six ty -first m atch betw een the representatives o f the ancient U niversities, comm enced a t L o rd ’s last Thursday, on account o f the presum ed sup eriority of the O xonians, w as perhaps h a rd ly so interesting as usual in an ticipation . B u t, as played, the gam e was so fu ll o f surprises th a t no one could com plain of dullness in th e m atch. O xfo rd in previous engage m ents th is year had won fo u r, draw n two, an d lost tw o m atches, w h ile C am bridge had w on three, draw n tw o, and lo st fo u r o f th e ir nine contests. B o th sides were presum ably stronger th a n th e average in batting , but, despite the absence o f G . R . Bardsw ell, O xfo rd were on paper considerably the stronger in bow ling. Cam bridge had the fortune to w in the toss and, as m atters tu rn e d out, w ith it th e ga m e ; and M itch e ll and W . G. G race, ju n ., the la tte r the last chosen blue, comm enced th e ir in nin gs on a first-class w icket. T h ou gh neither batsm an played in the best form , A rk w rig h t an d Cunliffe, the O xfo rd bow lers, m et w ith no success, and by som e qu ick scoring 59 had gone to the credit o f Cam bridge w hen M itc h e ll was c and b ju s t as he seemed to have played h im se lf in. Studd follow ed, bu t Grace was the next to leave, at 77, for 40, a very useful con tribu tion , b u t by no means a good disp lay o f batting. N . F . D ruce, th e crack U n ive rsity b a t o f the year, cam e n ext, b u t was bow led second b a ll by a yorker from F ry , and at 90 M a rrio tt i e ll to the sam e bowler. Eighteen runs were added, and then W ils o n was out u n lu ck ily , Le w is m issing him a t the w ick e t b u t the b a ll fa llin g in to the top of the latte r’s pad. W . G . D ru ce and Studd played steadily, b u t w hen the la tte r w as bow led fo r 28, m ade in an h ou r an d a half, six w ickets were dow n fo r 137. Then cam e the tu rn in g p o in t of the innings. ] [em ingway, whose rig h t to a place in the team has been questioned by some critics, h it w ith m uch vigour, and put some heart in to a. som ewhat lifeless gam e. In h a lf an hour 58 h ad been added, when l >ruce was out, and, though no fu rth er len g th y stand was m ade, the in nin gs realized 244. H em in gw ay was n inth o u t fo r 57, m ade in an h our, and in clu d in g ten 4’s, by fa r the bestinning.* on the side. O xford began fa irly w e ll w ith W a rne r and R aikes, though th e lig h t had become bad ; 27 runs teoing on in the first quarter o f an hour, b u t at 34 R a ike s was out, and th en in q u ick succession Foster, W a rn e r, and F ry were d is posed o f fo r the ad dition o f fo u r runs, and a t 48 M ord au n t w as clean bowled, a very bad show despite the very defective lig h t. F o r a few overs P h illip s batted w ell, b u t at 67 he w as bow led, and six w ickets were down. Leveson-G ow er and Sm ith were then together, and p la yin g better crick e t than th e ir pre decessors, th ey had raised the score to 96 when slig h t ra in added to the bad lig h t caused stum ps to be draw n a qu a rte r o f an hour early. O n F rid a y the not outs played a great game, an d q u ick ly saved the follow on, G ow er especially p la yin g fine cricket, 83 runs h avin g been added fo r the w icket when he played on. H is 73 was made in an h o u r and three quarters, and was a ca p ita l display. S m ith ju st exceeded h is 50, bu t found no one to stay w ith h im ; his innings extended over 130 m inutes an d was a sound and sterlin g display. W ith an advantage of 42 runs, Cam bridge again made a good start, M itch e ll batting adm irably, and Grace, though favoured b y luck, keeping h is w icke t up and m akin g runs, in fa ct 69 had been scored, o f w hich h is share was 28, w hen the latter, who had been m issed w hen in and w hen 19, w as bow led by a breaking b a ll from Gower. Studd was out cheaply, bu t M itch e ll and N . F . D ru ce pu t on 37. the la tte r having 22 o f them when he wa» caught from a poor stroke a t cover-p oint; M itch e ll follow ed a ru n later, h is 43 being m ade by capital cricket. F if ty runs were added by M a rrio tt and W ils o n in an hour, by crick e t o f uneven character, and W . G . D ru ce and W ilso n n u t on 24 m ore before the latte r le ft. H em ingw ay join e d I>ruce, b u t was n ot fated to repeat h is perform ance o f the first in nin gs, being bow led a t 298. T he Cam bridge captain was pla yin g a very fine gam e fo r his side, an d found good sup port from Low e, the partnership re alizin g 33 runs. W . G . D ruce was last m an o ut for 66, m ade in n early tw o hours, the largest an d m ost stylish in nin gs on h is side. O n Saturday, O xfo rd w ent in against 330, a very heavy task on a w icket som ew hat the worse for wear, b u t one not beyond thf ir powers on th e ir best form . The in nin gs w as a bad failu re, save fo r one b rillia n t perform ance. The order o f batting w as changed, an d Raikes, w ho was sent in seventh w icket instead o f first, was not out a t the close. F ry and W a rn e r were out a t 5, and Foster found b u t the feeblest sup port u n til R aikes cam e in . Foster never theless played w ith the u tm ost s k ill and c<nfidence, an d scored a t a great pace, in fa ct he had 1«0 o f the first 138, and w hen he was out a t 164 had m ade 121 in one hundred and tw enty-five m inutes, in clu d in g tw enty 4’s, a m arvellous success am idst so m any failures. N o one stayed w ith R aikes, Lowe finish in g off the in n in g s in fine style by clean b o ilin g th e last fou r batsm en, f am bndge w ere thus le ft w ith a victory, w hich on the play th ey thoroughly deserved, b y 136 runs. Th e fielding in the m atch, especially on th e part of O x fo rd did not fu lfil expectations ; an d it w ill be observed that Cam bridge were presented w ith 49 extras. N o balls were p le n tifu l, the to ta l in the fo u r in nin gs reaching 18. Score and a m lysis :— C am bridge U n iv e r sity . F irs t In n ing s. M r . F .
