T h ou gh Som ersetshire had a decidedly w eak team at Southam pton in th is m atch, com m enced on M onday, th ey obtained so great an advantage on the first day’s p la y th a t H am p sh ire were never after able to get upon even term s, and were fin a lly easily defeated. T h e credit o f Som ersetshire’s first score of 184 was p rin cip a lly due to tw o m en, V . T . H ill and N ichole, who between them scored 101 Th e w icket on M on day d id not w ear w ell, and H am psh ire m ade no sort o f stand, seven w ickets fa llin g fo r 70. The ta il on Tuesday d id som ew hat better, and 59 were pu t on fo r the la s t three w ickets, Capt. Q u in to n ’s 24 being a p lu ck y innings, and in clu d in g some good h its off W oods, w ho bow led very finely. I t should be m en­ tioned th a t W ootton, late o f K e n t, played in this m atch fo r the first tim e fo r H a n ts under the resi­ den tiary qu alification . Som ersetshire go in g in for the second tim e, on a w icke t w h ich had recovered in a great degree from the effects of the ra in , gave a fine e xh ib itio n o f batting. W oods and H ill scored ra p id ly till, a t 26, the la tte r left, and then th e captain an d R . P a la ire t h it up 92 in an hour, w hen P a la ire t w as out fo r 56. W oods and Porch p u t on 41, and then three w ickets fe ll ra p id ly . H am psh ire’s troubles were n ot yet over, for T ra sk and Poynton in eighty-five m inutes added 90 runs, the in nin gs closing w ith H am p sh ire le ft w ith 364 to w in. O n Tuesday evening H am psh ire had lost Robson’s w icket fo r 4 runs, and yesterday, despite a u seful partner­ ship betw een W ootton and B arto n w hich realized 60 runs, and some careful b a ttin g by Capt. A t D erby, on M onday, there was a good deal o f rain and p la y was m uch interfered w ith , the hom e team com pleting an in nin gs fo r 124, in w hich the only item s w o rth notice were tw o carefu l displays by G u nn and H . B . D a ft, and D erbyshire losing one w icket for 28 runs. M ore ra in fe ll in the n igh t, and w ith b rig h t sunshine in the m orning, runs were very d ifficu lt to get, the seventh w icket going dow n w ith the score at 84. Th en Bennett joined L . G. W rig h t, and the two p la yin g a capital gam e, the N o tts to tal was passed, and the partnership realized 67 rim s. W rig h t going in first w as eighth out, an d his 63 was a very s k ilfu l innings. B ennett’s 42 w as an invaluable innings, and m ade by m ost vigorous cricket. Flow ers signalised his re-appearance in the team by some fine bow ling. N o tts w ent in 42 behind, b u t on a w et w icket. Flow ers and Jones m ade a splendid start, and 71 were on the score-board before Sugg b rillia n tly caught Flow ers a t cover-point. D a ft and Jones played out tim e, N o tts being 42 runs on w ith one w icke t down. Yesterday, w ith the w eather d u ll and the w icket soft, B enn ett bow led w ith great effect, and h a lf the w ickets were dow n fo r 129 runs, bu t D ixo n played a capital in nin gs, and the score w as 161 fo r seven, w hen rain, w hich had m uch delayed pla y, came on h ea vily at h a lf past three, and the m atch was abandoned, the gam e being le ft in a fa irly even condition. W in n in g the toss, the club d id none too w e ll against the O xfo rd bow lers, G race being easily got rid of, and though m ost of the batsm en g o t runs, a t the fa ll of the seventh w icke t it looked as though the side w o uld be out fo r 150. Th en W h ite ­ head, w ell supported by M r. H illy a rd and Geeson, played capital cricket, and in the end the score reached 218. O xfo rd began so w ell th a t they looked lik e leaving th is to ta l fa r behind, the score w hen stum ps were draw n on M on day being 139 fo r three w ickets, R aikes n ot o u t 58. T h is to ta l he d id n o t increase on the resum ption o f play, the score occupied h im tw o hours and in clud ed eleven 4’s, a stylish and vigorous innings. Th e rem ainder o f the team , w ith tw o exceptions, d id little on a w icket w hich kicked badly. P h illip s in forty m inutes h it up 40 runs, in clu d ­ in g seven 4’s, a h ’ rd -h it score and p layed in quite th e proper w ay on such a w icket. F ry scored 45 in h is best style, and was la st m an out. G . O. Sm ith was in 25 m inutes fo r a single, and in a ll m ade five in 40 m inutes. O n M arylebone again going in , 35 behind, W . G . played a fine gam e, and though he scarcely scored w ith h is accustom ed freedom , he yet, in an h ou r and fifty m inutes, registered 72 runs on a w icket w h ich w as a ll against the batsm an, w ith o u t g ivin g any chance w h ich w ent to hand. H e w as fo u rth out a t 131, and a draw w as now certain. Lacey m ade some very fine h its in h is not out 47, and M . C.
