W in n in g the toss on T h u rs day last on an excellent w icket, a t M aidstone, they occupied the w ickets the greater p a rt of the day, and to ta lle d 327. K e n t had n o t th e ir best eleven, Patterson, W ilso n , R ash leig h and W . H earne a ll being absentees. There was no in d iv id u a l score of 100, b u t C. B . F iy , w ho w ent in first, was u nfortunate to lose th a t d istin ctio n by one notch. F o r the second w icket, w ith Foster, he p u t on 83 in fifty-five m inutes, w ith -M ordaunt fo r the th ird 92 in about an hour, and h is 99 in a ll occupied tw o hours and th irtv-five m inutes, and included fifteen 4’s. Foster w as lu cky in h is in nin gs, givin g tw o chances w hen 27, b u t he played b rig h t attractive cricket. M ord au n t’ s 34 was n ot in h is best form . Leveson-G ow er played a very fine innings, going in fo u rth and being six th out for 74, m ade in ninety-five m inutes by good h ittin g a ll round the w icket; fo r the s ix th w icket he had a capital partn er in G. O. S m ith, 74 runs go in g on in seventy m inutes. A . H earne an d M ason began splen d id ly fo r K en t, m akin g 88 in three quarters of an hour le ft fo r play. O n F rid a y the w icke t began to show’ signs of w ear, and though 134 was the to ta l fo r one w icket, an d 200 w ent up w ith on ly three m en out, K e n t d id not surpass the O xo n ia n ’s score. A le c H earne’s 105 was a cu riosity o f scoring— fifteen 4’s, fifteen 2’s, and fifteen singles. H e h it w ith am azing vig o u r fo r a m an h is size, and h is display w as w orthy a ll praise. M ason also showed a p a rtia lity fo r b ig h its, h is 50 in clu d in g e ig h t 4’s an d five 2’s. Cooper played a nice in nin gs, scoring 43 out o f 68 in forty-five m inutes, and Easby helped H earne to add 53 fo r the second w icke t in h a lf an hour. In O xfo rd ’s second hands F ry was dism issed at 27, bu t W a rn e r and F o ster played splendidly, and in an h ou r added no few er than 128 runs. Foster m ade 57, the sam e num ber as in h is first innings, and this tim e w ith o u t a m istake. W a rn e r was fo u rth out a t 208, h avin g been b a ttin g tw o hours and a qu arter w ith o u t any blem ish in h is p'ay. M o rd au n t also repeated h is first in n in g s score, b u t got h is 34 in th irty-five m inutes. O n Saturday G. O . S m ith played a splendid n ot out in n in g s o f 100 and secured h is blue. H e was b a ttin g tw o hours and five m inutes w ith great confidence and s k ill. W ith 384 fu r eig h t w ickets the in nin gs was declared, and K e n t losing A le c H earne fo r 0, were beaten by 215 runs, though M ason and Ea sb y added 75 in sixty-five m inutes, and Cooper played w e ll fo r seventy m inutes fo r h is 39. W in n in g the toss, B ain b rid g e p u t his opponents in on a w icke t dam aged by ra in , and the po licy was quite justified, Y o rk sh ire being a ll out in three hours for 163. Th e first fou r w ickets fe ll for 30, b u t W a in w rig h t and Lan caster then p u t on 66 in an hour, the new m an’s 22 being carefu lly m ade. W a in w rig h t’s 61 occupied an h ou r and a quarter and in cluded eight 4-hits. W icke ts again fe ll ra p id ly u n til H irs t and H u n te r m ade one of th e ir la st w icket stands and pu t on 30 in q u ick tim e. B ain b ridge and W a lte r Q uaife opened the W a rw icksh ire in nin gs in splendid style and in an h ou r and a h a lf scored 114 runs, when the latte r le ft for h a lf th a t n um ber m ade w itho ut a fau lt. W . G . Q u aife was soon out, b u t D ocker and B ain bridg e played out tim e, th e latte r being 70 not out, b u t h avin g been le t off a t 39, a t 55, and a t 64. O n F rid a y B ain bridg e raised h is score to 96, b u t was again m issed a t 95. P la y w as very slow D iv e r and L ille y a t one tim e m akin g 6 ru n s in h a lf an hour, and in the end three hours less five m inutes pla y saw the innings close for the ad dition of 106 runs. 90 behind, Y o rk sh ire lost three w ickets fo r 56, bu t Peel and D enton then m ade an invaluable stand and 66 were added before the latte r was out fo r a m ost welcom e if lu cky 45. W a in w rig h t gave little trouble, b u t M oorhouse stayed w ith Peel t ill the close o f play. On Saturday, the not outs played verv fine cricket, and favoured by some good fortun e took the score to 240, when Peel, to w hom Y o rk sh ire chiefly owe the saving of the gam e, was out fo r 78, the re su lt of three hours play. The w icket had yielded 96 ru n s in 100 m inutes. H aw ke h it 26 o u t o f 43 before being lbw , and M oorhous« found an excellent partner in H irs t, the p a ir in 55 m inutes adding 95 runs, w hen the in nin gs was declared. M oorhouse was b a ttin g three hours and tw enty m inutes, and his 102 included eighteen 4’s.
