A t Leyton on Thursday la st Essex and H am psh ire each were fa irly welfc represented, and the w icket not being of the best the bow lers had a tu rn n ot altogether unneeded in th is year of h ig h scoring. B u m s had been le ft out o f the Essex team , and H . C. Preece, of the Bees C.C., was given the vacant place. B a ttin g first, Essex were a ll out in less th an tw o hours fo r 94. There was n othin g lik e a stand, and the highest score was 19, both Fane and Preece scoring th a t num ber. Soar and B a ld w in bow led unchanged, the latte r h aving ra th er the better record. O n H am psh ire going in , Robson and H ill opened w ell, 33 runs being m ade in a quarter of an hour, w hen the form er was out. H ill and B arton p u t on 21 m ore, and, after W a rd had been easily disposed of, H ill and Bacon m ade another short stand, and the score m ounted to 81 before Bacon was sm a rtly caught and bowled. Then cam e a break dow n, P ick e tt bo w lin g w ith im m ense effect. H ill was bow led by h im fo r a splendid 43, m ade in seventy m inutes, and in clud in g a 5 and seven 4’s ; and the la st six w ickets realized b u t 30 runs. The balance ag ain st Essex was o n ly 17, and Owen an d Carpenter knocked these off in six m inutes, and, going on w ith th e ir h ittin g , 50 w ent up in h a lf an hour, Carpenter’s first 25 runs containing six 4’s. The pace then slackened, bu t no w icket had falle n a t the close of pla y, and 89 runs had been scored, Essex then having a useful lead. O n F rid a y they d id very w ell, th o ug h Fane, M cG ahey, and H ig g in s a ll failed. H . C. Preece again p la yin g good cricket, and K o rtrig h t and R u ssell scoring freely a t the close of the innings, H am psh ire were le ft w ith 2S6 to get to w in . T h is, despite a fine in nin gs by B arton, never looked probable, and on F rid a y n ig h t they were in a hopeless position, 151 ru jis behind, w ith seven w ickets down. Saturd ay m orning saw W ebb, the not out, add 23 to h is score, and the other three batsm en get 1 ru n between them , P ick e tt dism issing a ll three. H is b o w lirg th roughout the m atch was rem arkable, he taking in a ll nine w ickets fo r 91 runs. Score and analysis E8SEX. F irs t Innings. M r. H . G. Owon, b Soar ... Th e C lu b on Th u rsday la st pitted a strong team against the lig h t blues at L o rd ’s fo r the la s t tria l m atch, indeed, as it proved m uch too strong fo r them . The w icke t was ra th er fiery and the b a ll got up aw kw ardly, b u t there was nothing to excuse the d is m issal o f the Cantabs fo r 160, M itch e ll played fine cricket fo r 41, and w h ilst he and N . F . D ru ce, who made 37, were pu ttin g on 39 fo r the th ird w icket, the ba tting w as of capital qu a lity, b u t W . W ilso n , o f Sussex, alone playin g h im w ith con fidence fo r some tim e, after startin g indifferently. S ix w ickets were dow n for 153, when D avidson joined W ilso n , and 52 were p u t on before the am ateur was out fo r 75, a very fine in n in g s after he got set. A t the close o f play on T h ursday, M . C. C. were 86 runs on w ith tw o w ickets to fa ll, D avidson n ot out 60. N e x t m orning the last nam ed added 20 and was last m an out, fo r the best as w ell as the highest score of the in n in g s : he was in fo r 100 m inutes and h it tw elve 4’8. O ne-hundred-and-ten behind, the Cantabs failed badly before A ttew ell and D avidson, only M itch e ll and G race ju n ior, exceeding a score. Th e breakdow n was so com plete that, spite of M itch e ll’s 29, seven w ickets were down fo r 54. Then Grace an d Low e m ade a good effort and p u t on 31 for the eighth w icket, b u t only 14 ru n s had been added w hen the last w icke t fell, leaving the C lu b victorious by an in n in g s and 11 runs. D avidson and A ttew ell bowled unchanged through th is innings, and a reference to the score w ill show how greatly the form er assisted in the success o f h is side.
