Cricket 1895
236 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e 27, 1895 SUSSEX v. OXFORD UNIVERSITY. Once more the county ground at Brighton saw a great batting display when these elevens met on Monday. G. L. W ilson and Marlow going in first for Sussex nearly rivalled the memorable partnership of Palairet and Hewett for the first wicket, 303 being on the board before W ilson was easily caught at mid on. The wicket of course was good, and the Oxford bowl ing, without Bardswell, not too strong, but the batting was particularly free from fault, only one chance, given by Marlow when 58, being offered in the two hours and 50 minutes o f the partnership, the rate of scoring being almost 107 in the hour. W ilson made twenty-ieven 4’s in his excellent display, and Marlow, who survived him a quarter-of-an-hour, 18 like hits. Ranjitsinhji, Brann, Murdoch, and Parris, all scored between 30 and 40, and the Sussex total reached 487. Early on Tuesday the Oxonians went in against this big total, and remaining at the wickets all day they came within 14 of heading it for the loss of five wickets. Fry and Warner began well, putting on 72 in 50 minutes for the first wicket, the latter scoring the more quickly. Then Fry and Foster, both play ing in good style, in 100 minutes added 141. Mor daunt then joined Fry. and in 75 minutes 121 more were put on before the latter left for 125, made in three hours and three-quarters. Leveson-Gower was disposed of for 17, but Phillips and Mordaunt made another century partnership, 104 in 50 minutes, by some very rapid scoring. Continuing yesterday, the score was raised to 651, Mordaunt again playing splendidly and adding 88 to his score without losing bis wicket, and receiving good support from Cunliffe and Hartley. His big total occupied him four hours and a half, and was his biggest score in first class cricket. Sussex were 164 in arrear, and opened their second innings, with nothing but a draw to play for, immediately after the luncheon interval. W ilson again did well, and Ranjitsinhji and Murdoch put defeat out of the question, time finally arriving when eight wickets had fallen for 272 in the innings, and twenty eight for 1,410 in the match.
