Cricket 1895
230 CKrCKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. Ji ne 27, 1895. I ZIN GARI v. GENTLEMEN OF ENGLAND. To celebrate their jubilee the famous wandering club, which owes its foundation in great part to the late Frederick Ponsonby, Earl of Bessborough, on Thursday last encountered at Lord’s the Gentlemen of England. W ith yery powerful batting sides, and not too much bowling, high scores were to be ex pected, but in all thirty wickets fell for 1,165 runs, an average of only 38’8; nothing phenomenal for this year. W oods and Ernest Smith would have strengthened the Gentlemen considerably, but in a match of a somewhat holiday nature, perhaps it was just as well that they were absent. Hewett began in his usual way, and 51 of 75 in fifty minutes (ten 4’s) was his record, and Jackson and Stoddart both hit hard. Wynyard played about the best cricket of the day, he was in for little more than an hour, and his 56 (nine 4’s) was beautifully hit. A . G. Steel, who made a welcome re-appearance, was in seventy minutes for 38 not out. In the Gentlemen’s first innings W .G. made 34, it taking seventy minutes to get them, but nothing remarkable occurred up to the end of the first day’s play, when five wickets were down for 148, but on Friday there was no lack of hard hitting, W . G. Grace, jun., and Fry beginning well, the sixth wicket adding 78 in an hour; then V. T. Hill and Grace in forty-five minutes putting on 76. Grace was in an hour and three-quarters for his 79, the highest score of the innings, with eleven 4’s. Burnup joined Hill, and both played finely, putting on runs very quickly, until at 308 Hill was out for a well hit innings of 73 in an hour and twenty minutes. McGregor left at 361, but the last wicket put on 50 runs, Bumup being left not o u t; he had been batting an hour and three quarters for his 66, made in ex tremely good style. 122 to the bad I Zingari lost two wickets in knocking off the arrears. The third partnership added exactly this number, the club then being 61 runs on. Stoddart looked like getting his century, but was out when 8 short for a finely hit innings, which included a 5 and fourteen 4’s. Wynyard and Steel played good and careful cricket on Friday evening and Saturday morning, but the former’s 51 in sixty-five minutes was the only good score, and the Gentlemen were left with 172 to win. Grace and Sellers gave a fine display, 25 going up in ten minutes and 50 in twenty-five minutes. Grace gave a chance when 30, but 100 were scored in an hour. Despite a second chance by the champion the runs were knocked off for no wicket, Grace just reaching his century. He had eleven"4’s and Sellers 12. W ith this innings Grace passed Brockwell’s aggre gate for all last^season on 22nd June! Score and analysis:— I Z ingari . First Innings. Mr. H. T. Hewett, st Mac Gregor, b Grace, sen. .. 51 Mr. F. W ith the exception of Mr. R. A . Studd, none o f the Cambridge batsmen at Hove last Thursday were at home with the lob bowling of Walter Humphreys, who actually disposed of eight of them, though, of course, he was occasionally freely scored from. On such a wicket as that of the Sussex County Ground, a score of 236 cannot be considered as above mediocrity, but when six wickets had fallen for 102, even this total did not seem likely. Studd and Burrough, however, in forty minutes added 64, and the last three wickets put on 70. Studd’s 96occupied two hours and a quarter and included eleven 4’s, and Cambridge would indeed have fared badly without him. Wilson and Mitchell had scored 43 in half-an- hour for the first wicket, but all the batsmen had been in difficulties with Humphreys. There were no extras in this innings. On Sussex going in Marlow was out at 16, but G. M. Wilson hit brilliantly and made 96 out of the first 146in seventy- five minutes. His innings included eighteen 4’s, and with Murdoch in one hour he put on 129 runs; 200' went up at the end of one hundred and ten minutes, Murdoch and Newham keeping up the rate of scoring until the latter left at 230. Brann played out time on Thursday, but on Friday more careful cricket was seen, and a long stand was made, 188 being put on for the fourth wicket, Brann making 92 in two hours and three quarters. Bean made another excellent partner to Murdoch, scoring exactly the same number as Brann in an hour and fifty minutes, during which period Murdoch made but 26, Bean’s chief hits were seventeen 4’ s. Murdoch’s 226, the biggest score he has made for Sussex, occupied rather over six hours and included thirty-three 4’s. He played with much freedom On Thursday, but rather slowly on Friday, taking no risks. The total reached 592. W ith arrears of 356 the University again did badly on Friday evening against Humphreys, and lost three wickets to thelob-bowler for 49runs, R A . Studd suc cumbing to him without scoring. On Saturday„ despite two good displays, they entirely failed to get on terms. Marriott and Hemingway in half-an-hour made 61, hitting Humphreys severely, and Lowe played a dashing 74 including eleven 4’s. He and Burrough in thirty-five minutes put on 53 runs for the seventh wicket. The ninth partnership, Lowe and Shine, lasted twenty minutes and produced 40 runs,, but Sussex won easily by an innings and 100 runs. In all 1084 were scored for 30 wickets, the third successive match in which the thousand runs have been exceeded at Brighton. Score and analysis:— C ambridge U niversity . First Innings.
