Cricket 1895
220 CIIICKET : A WEEKLY ]U -OK ]> OF THE OAMK. JiTfrE 20, 1895. M.C.C. & GROUND v. HAMPSHIRE. Most of the leading counties being engaged in other matches, the M.C.C. were not able to pit a very strong team against Hampshire at Lord’s on Monday. The wicket was not first class, and great progress was made with the match, twenty-two wickets falling for 332 runs. Hampshire started badly, four wickets going down for 46 runs, but "Ward and Quinton added 31 for the fifth. Three more wickets fell cheaply, but Bencraft and Quinton made the best stand of the innings—52 for the ninth. Captain Quinton’s 62 was a patient display, for which he batted an hour and fifty minutes. The M.C.C. innings was almost without noteworthy incident. Pougher and Storer for the fifth wicket put on 41 in twenty-five minutes, the former playing lively cricket for his 31; and W oodcock and Geeson, when nine were down for 107, played very finely, and added 27 for the last wicket. Forty-one to the good, Hamp shire lost two wickets for 23 before the drawing of stumps for the day, and though on Tuesday Soar’s 32 was the highest score, and the longest stand, his partnership with Bencraft—who was not out each innings—o f 52 for the ninth wicket, the total, which was but 86 with eight wickets down, reached 143, leaving the M.C.C. with 185 to get to wan. Bean and L e I rafford began so well, hitting up 36 in a quarter of an hour, and 50 in twenty minutes, that a victory seemed probable; but Soar, going on a second time, dismissed De Trafford for 25 out of 63 made in twenty-five minutes, and this proved the turning point of the innings. After Bean left at 75 for a vigorous 41 made in 35 minutes, and including seven ’ 8 a capital performance on a wicket which had become tricky—no one made more than a dozen, and Baldwin and Soar had fine analysis, the innings terminating with the county 54 runs ahead. Baldwin in the two innings of M.C.C., had 12 wickets for 107 runs. The extras were unusually numerous—58 byes and two wides out of a total of 582. A t Birmingham on Monday Warwickshire gave a fine display of batting on a fast wicket, against a strongly composed eleven of Gloucestershire including Painter, Ferris, Murch and Rice. Bainbridge was out at 16, but Walter Quaife and J. E. Hill made a capital stand, the professional leaving when within two of his fifty, the wicket having added 81 in an hour and a-quarter. W . G. Quaife came in and 46 were put on before Hill was joined by Lilley, but for the addition of 23 more the amateur was caught at the wicket, his beautifully made 73 having occupied two hours and forty minutes and including twelve fours. Lilley, though he began slowly, played sound cricket, and when on the fall of the sixth wicket at 214, he was joined by A. C. S. Glover, the bowling was quite mastered, and 123 runs were scored in an hour and three minutes, of which Glover’s share was 31 not out, Lilley made 135. On Tuesday, Mr. Glover continued his innings at a much quicker rate of scoring, and added 46 in 55 minutes, being last out. Gloucester shire started badly, but W .G. and Wrathall scored for the second wicket, the champion making 43 m hour. Six wickets were down for 124 but Dear- love and Rice made a stand, and the seventh partner ship realised 49. Rice’s 44 occupied an hour and three-quarters. The Westemers were 200behind in the first innings and following on lost Grace at 17 and Ferris at 23, the game being adjourned at six o’ clock owing to the bad light with the score at 25 for two wickets. Yesterday, Wrathall and W .G ., junior, were soon disposed of, but Rice, though he found no worthy partner for a' long time, again played good cricket, his 64 being the highest innings for his side. Board hit well for 39 (not out), and kept up the recent run of good scores by wicket-keeping. In the end Warwickshire won easily by an innings and 24 runs. It will be noticed that Lilley got rid of Grace in each innings and scored the highest total in the match. Score and analysis : W arwickshire . First Innings. Mr. A . J . L.
