Cricket 1895

218 CRICKET. A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 20, 1895 O’Brien and R. 8 L>ieas, for Middlesex against Sussex, at Brighton on Thursday last would have been worthy of perpetua tion. Arcades ambo, gentle tappers both, that is to say, in three hours and a-quarter the two amateurs added 338 runs, which gives an average of a hundred and four an hour. Sir Timothy was at the wickets just over four hours for his 202, so that he scored very nearly a run a minute off his own bat. R. S. Lucas was one of the three batsmen to make their first hundred in an important match last week. The other two were A. O. Jones, who made 118 for Notts v. Leicester at Leicester, and Tunnicliffe, who got 101 for York shire against Middlesex, in each case in the early part of the week. I t was not only for the determined stand of the two Middlesex amateurs, though that the match at Brighton at the end of last week was noteworthy, in a year so far notable for abnormal run- getting. The aggregate of the three days did not it is true reach the high water mark. It was in fact 85 short of the sum total of the match between Sussex and Somerset a week before, which was itself the record for an inter- county match. Still, in both cases, it was noteworthy, that in spite of a huge score of over 500 by the side winning the toss the game was nothing like finished at the end of the three days. As a proof, were any wanting, of the super-excellence of the Sussex County Gr. ound for run-getting purposes, it only needs mention, that in the two matches referred to successive matches, 2,603 runs were scored for 60 wickets. This give a huge average of nearly 43J runs for the two games. T h e big innings of 488 made by the second eleven of Lancashire at the Oval on Thursday gave some ground for the belief that Surrey’s second were going, after an unbeaten record of two seasons, to receive a severe check. Instead, when the game ended, Surrey were 19 on with only two wickets down in their second innings, which was, after the heavy task they had to face for their first knock, not such a bad performance. Another five run8 would have made the aggregate a thousand runs for twenty-two wickets. It is not often, indeed, in matches of this kind that the outcome of two days’ cricket is a total of 995 runs. W . D e a n , who has been introduced just lately into the Hampshire eleven as a wicket-keeper with such satisfactory results, is identical with the stumper who has done duty for the Thames Ditton Club for several years. He appeared on some few occasions, unless I am in error, in the Surrey eleven. THE POSITIONS OF COUNTIES.
