Cricket 1895

214 CRICKET: A W JEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 20, 1895. M.C.C. AND GROUND v. KENT. Though the county eleven at one time held a very considerable advantage in this game played at Lord’s m the latter part of last week, the finish was all against them, and they lost by 111 runs, thanks to the Ciiampion’s batting and Attewell’s bowling. The wicket when play started on Thursday was not in good condition, and Martin was very difficult to play, Grace being in for a quarter of an hour without scoring. C. W . W right and Chatterton were easily disposed of, and then H. H. Massie, the Australian, came in, but was speedily dismissed, three wickets being down for 39. Davidson gave Grace better help, but the latter, who should have been caught when 26, was out l.b.w. for 30. Though Storer, Attewell, W . G. junior, and T. Brown all made useful scores of 20 and upwards, the total o f a rather tedious innings was only 184, Brown (of Bedfordshire) batting 40 minutes for his 26. After rain had fallen Kent scored freely by Mason and Alec Hearne. The latter reached his 50 in 65 minutes, and then escaped from an easy chance to Massie, but at 113 he was run out, the partnership having lasted 85 minutes. Mason soon followed for a faultless 55. Leslie W ilson hit brilliantly and got good support from Easby and Cooper, the county at the close of play being 22 runs on with 7 wickets to fall. In the last 55 minutes 76 runs had been scored. On Friday, Attewell and Davidson met with great success, the County’s batting breaking down so badly that 56 runs onJy were added for the seven outstanding wickets. W il son’s 57 made in 70 minutes included a chance when 24, but was worthy of great praise. M.C.C. were 78 runs to the bad, but though Grace began slowly, and at 15 gave a difficult chance, he settled down to play the good bowling in his best style, and with Chatter- ton added 62 runs in 45 minutes. Chatterton’s stylish innings of 30 was closed by a neat catch at slip, and Massie hit in his old style for 36, with Grace putting on 65 inns in half an hour. But the best stand was 72 between Storer and Grace, for the seventh wdcket, in 55 minutes, in the course of which the great bats man reached his century. The Champion’s 125 was a great innings, played on a by no means perfect wicket, it occupied him three hours and a half and included eleven 4’s. W ith 5321 to win Kent fared very badly before Attewell, and five wickets were down for 38 when play was adjourned. On Saturday, only Meynck-Jones and Marchant did much. Their part nership of 43 in 25 minutes for the eighth wicket was a most spirited performance. The other batsmen failed, and m the end the club won as above stated. Score and analysis:— M.C.C.
