J une 13, 1S9). CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 199 CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY v. M.C.C. AN L) GROUND. The team which the Marylebone Club sent to Cam bridge on Thursday last was stroug at all points of the game, and the performance of the Cantabs in winning by an innings and 23 runs was brilliant in the extreme. The teams played 12 a-side, and Gray and Marriott being unable to play, the vacant places were iilled by C. E. M. Wilson, who so far had failed to maintain his Uppingham reputation, and J. Burrough. Mitchell and W ilson opened the batting on a run-getting wicket, but runs came slowly until at 37 the former was out. R. A. Studd and Wilson then by some fine batting took the total to 142, and N. F. Druce and W ilson added 16 more before the freshman was out for 84, made in 2 hours and 20 minutes. He gave a chance at the wicket when 15, but played a very good innings. N. F. Druce had several useful partners, and for the re mainder of the day continued to play finished cricket, seven wickets being down at the close of play for 374, Druce not out 122. On Friday Burrough and Lowe both supported Druce well, Burrough’s 42 being a brilliantly-hit innings, and the wicket put on 107, and Lowe and Druce adding 81 for the ninth wicket. Druce reached 199 just before Lowe was caught, and Shine and Candler were both bowled by Davidson before he could complete his 200, or even get a ball to make the run wanted. He was at the wicket four hours and a half, and his big score in cluded twenty-three 4’s. The M.C.C. in their first innings scored 252, but nine wickets fell for 147. Of the earlier batsmen Carpenter played a stylish innings of 61, including six 4’s, and Rawlin was unluckily run out with his score at 30. When Hornsby and Pigg got together they hit out freely, and 88 were put on chiefly by the former’s determined batting. His 51 included nine 4’s. -The bowling of Lowe and Shine in this innings is worthy of notice. 263 behind, the Club followed on, and had lost one wicket for 19 when the game was adjourned. On Saturday the brothers Leese played admirably together, but were both out at 76. Gunn having failed, Rawlin and Carpenter added 53 for the fifth wicket, when Rawlin was well caught from a hot return. Of the remaining batsmen Davidson alone scored freely in his excellent 50, including seven 4’s, and the University won as above stated. In the match Lowe had nine wickets for 124 runs, and altogether 1,( 07 runs were scored for tliirty- three wickets. Score and analysis :— C ambridge U niversity . F. Mitchell, b Rawlin 14 C. E. M.
