Cricket 1895

194 CU 1CKET : A W E E K L Y ] KCOKD OF T H E UAA1K. JUM 13. 1M>f). “ Where do you field ? ” “ Usually at short slip. It is my favourite place in the field, as well as that in which I am called upon to play. I hope to do well in it as I have a good long reach.” “ Will you tell me of any fast scoring you have done in a match ?” “ My fastest score was 143 against Honor Oak on June 26 last year. This was made in an hour and fifty minutes. I have not made any very hard hits for the eleven, but last year, forthesecond, I have several times driven the hall out of the Oval.’ , “ You havehad one or two long partnerships this year?” “ Yes, 306 with Abel against Cambridge University, and 256 against Essex with the same partner. My share in the first was 171, and in the second 123.” “ You have played nine innings for Surrey this season ? ” “ Yes, and have scored123, 62,171, 25,4, 43, 13, 33, 0, in all 474 runs. My average before to-day’s failure was 59. Now I suppose it has come down.” (This was a patent fact so I could only condole with Holland and hope that the average would soon go up again.) “ Only one more question about cricket, Mr. Holland. Had you at first, and have you now, any nervousness in facing first-class bowling ?,f “ No. I cannot say that I ever had. I have always tried to do my best, and if the bowler has been too good for me it has been no more than I expected. I have been so much more fortunate than I hoped, that I have never lost the confidence which some people put down to my natural impudence, and perhaps they are right.” “ And do you engage in any other sport ? ” “ I am very fond of cycling and do a little in that way. Also I have gone in for foot ball in the winter, and last season I played during the Ea*ter Holidays for Luton Town. I should much like to play more football than I have had the opportunity to take part in up to now.” (I understand that Holland was definitely invited by the Luton Town F. C. to sign articles to play for them during the com ing season, but that he very wisely declined to bind himself, in view of possible contingen cies of cricket.) By this time Wood was hitting Tyler and cutting Woods in fine style, and Brockwell was digging the grave of his reputation as a scorer by blocking with damnable iteration (though the burial was but the forerunner of a happy, and let us hope a permanent resurrection to form onthefollowingmorning), and it was plain that my young friend would not be required to re-don his flannels, and so I bade farewell to the junior member of the Surrey eleven, wishing him a success corn in' nsurate with the courtesy and modesty with which he had detailed the short but ample record of his <ricket days, for there is no r ason why, equally with the young Aus tralian prodigy, Clem Hill, of whom I wrote not long since, he should not attain to the very highest distinction amongst batsmen. A free and confident batsman with good style and fine reach, he needs only wider experience and fuller strength to become in a few years the finished cricketer of whose prowess he gives such ample promise to-day as a lad of nine teen, and for the sake of Surrey, as well as that < >f Holland himself, I sincerely hope that the estimate now formed of his abilities may be accurately fulfilled bythe facts ofthefuture.
