The crowd at Trent Bridge on W hit Monday more nearly approached, than has been usual of late years, its old-time dimensions. The weather was somewhat threatenin', and the wicket did not play too well at the outset owing to recent rain. Maurice Read stood out of the Surrey team, while the Notts captain was unable to play, as was also Pike the wicket keeper. The first day showed some fairly even play. Only 241 were scored for thirteen wickets, the highest total was Gunn’s 41, made in an hour, and the ball all day had the better of the bat. Two Notts men were hurt, Gunn slightly, but Flowers so severely by a hard blow on the back of his left hand, that he had to retire hurt, and was unable to bowl in Surrey’s first innings, and only to go in to bat at the end of Notts second innings. This was a serious loss to Notts, whose bowlers were already weak in numbers. Oscroft and Bagguley made a good stand against the Surrey bowlers late in the innings and registered 32 in three-quarters-of-an-hour; the young amateur has a capital style, and it is to be hoped that he will be fre quently available for his county. Surrey scored three only in the first quarter-of-an-hour of their innings, the bowling being excellent, Lockwood left at five, Brockwell at 35, and Holland at 66, but Abel played in his best form, and was not out 39 when stumps were drawn. Tuesday brought much better weather, and with the Notts’ bowling weakened by Flowers’ absence, Surrey had much the best of the game. The earlier wickets did not do much, and Surrey were but seven ahead at the fall of the seventh wicket. Then Key, who had gone in with the score at 88 for 5 began to hit brilliantly, and in two hours and five minutes he scored 127, including nineteen 4’s. His principal help mate was Richardson, who made 41 not out, and this pair actually put on 70 runs in 25 minutes, possibly a record even for this season o f fast scoring. 144 to the bad, No-ts in three hours scored 122 for three wickets, by slow' but fine cricket. Gunn’s 63 were got in his most masterly style, and Jones and W right main tained a stubborn defence. On the third day of the match the seven outstanding wickets added only 83 runs. C. W . W right played a sound game, and little Bagguley gave some trouble, whilst Flowers, despite his injury, went to the wickets. Surrey were set 58 to win, and .these were ma.de for the loss of Lock- wOod’s wicket. Score and analysis : N otts . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. A. O.
