182 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J unk G, 1985. MIDDLESEX v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. That Middlesex should be beaten by Gloucestershire is a circumstance which few would have ventured to prophesy a month ago. Yet, thanks to Dr. Grace and Painter, this result was attained last Saturday at Lord's. The great batsman played a fine innings of 169 made up of 24 fours, 5 threes, 11 twos, and 36 singles. For this he was at the wickets five hours and ten minutes, being at last out with the score at 362. He began slowly, making 22 only in the first hour, and his play for the first half-hour after lunch was below par, but the last half of his innings was marked by great freedom and confidence. His best supporters were Wrathall, who put on 23 out of 32 in half-an-hour for the first wicket, Painter, who helped to add 41 for the second in thirty-five minutes, Kitcat, who in seventy minutes scored 36 out of 83, Dearlove, a recruit from the Bohemians C.C., Bris tol, who showed good defence in his 23 out of 73 made in an hour, and Captain Luard, who played a fine innings of 64 out of 105 for the sixth wicket. Towards the end of the innings Dr. Thornton’s left- handed bowling was very effective. The wicket had b ^en fast and good, but during Thursday night a good deal of rain fell, and before lunch the wicket played so treacherously that Middlesex did very well in compiling 200. Stoddart was out at 6, but Webbe played well, and 45 were added for the second wicket. The later batsmen failed, except O’Brien, who made 28 by 6 fours, and 4 singles, until six wickets had fallen for 107. Vernon and Nepean tried hard to save the follow-on, and 80 were added in less than an hour. After their separation the innings was soon finished. A hundred and sixty-six behind, Middlesex made a bad start, three wickets going for 47. Then Lucas and Rawlin played capital cricket, adding 107 in seventy-five minutes before stumps were drawn for the day. On Saturday, the wicket played badly and Painter again bowled very finely, so that only 54 runs were added for the seven remaining wickets. Rawlin’s 83, was a hard hit innings with 11 fours. Painter in the match had twelve wickets for 1C9 runs, and Jessop also bowled well. Wanting 43 only to win, Grace altered his order of going in, with the result that five wickets fell to Thom ton for 20 runs before the end was reached. Painter’s success as a bowler was the most noteworthy feature of the game. This player is now in his thirty-seventh year, and his suddenly coming to the front as a bowler is one of the most remarkable events of this year’s cricket. It will be noticed that four of his wickets in the second innings were due to catches behind the stumps by Board, who in the three matches of Gloucestershire this season, up to date, has caught sixteen batsmen.
