Cricket 1895

JjNE 6, 1SJ.J. U K K J K L T : A W E E K L Y K E J J R U O F T l i l i OAMJfi. 179 wags the body. I was present at Liverpool in 1885, when the last Lancashire wicket piled on 173 runs. Why, here’s Hunter, who has often helped to stop a rot in the past, playing an important part in another last wicket stand on the same day—102 v. Cam bridge University. Yorkshire should look after this partner of Hunter’s, David Denton. If he had had a tenth part of the trial some of his county men nave had, he would have long ago obtained his cap. He is one of the soundest young batsmen the county possesses, and is a brilliant field. For some years, though he is not far on in the twenties, he played for a soap-making firm—Hodgson and Simpson—well known cricketally, in the West Riding. Recently he has been engaged in an office at Castleford, but solely on account of his cricket. But enough. Here’ sWhit Monday at last. I have been hard at work almost since day break so that I may complete this before cricket begins. I have heard Lancashire and Yorkshire are to play at Sheffield. Somehow, I seem to bode no good luck for the White Rose this year, just as the Notts and Surrey match at Trent Bridge may not add another point to the {Southerner’s total. But we shall see. The outlook, meteorologically, is not promising. Bowlers ought to be happy for once. I shan’t expect a century this week— no, not even from W. Gr.’s bat. CLAPTON v.
