Seven old Blues appeared for the University, C. B. Fry playing for the first time this season ; of these, three were seniors, the fourth Cun liffe, the Etonian freshman bowler. Except that F. W . Milligan played in place of F. S. Jackson, York shire played their usual team. The Oxford batting in the first innings was curiously uneven. Five men scored between 35 and 60 each, and the other six put on five runs between them. Mordaunt and Phillips both played splendid cricket, but Warner’s was a mixed display, and Leveson-Gower gave two difficult chances. Mordaunt’s 59 included ten 4’s. Yorkshire exceeded their opponents score by 37 chiefly by the plucky batting of the tail, the first five batsman on the list scoring 116 and the second five 146. Nine men got double figures but no one exceeded 50, so that the scoring was very even. There was some rapid hitting towards the close of the innings, M oor house and Hawke making 48 in thirty-five minutes, Lord Hawke and Mounsey 35 in twenty minutes, Lord Hawke and Hirst 32 in less than a quarter of an hour, and Hirst and Hunter 30 in fifteen minutes. Again the Oxonians batted unevenly, Warner, Foster, and Mordaunt played brilliantly, and the first-named pair making 55 in half an hour for the second wicket. Warner was again seen to advan tage, and his 52 included nine 4’s ; and Leveson- Gower was missed at 33, but with G. O. Smith put on 55 in an hour for the seventh s,wicket, and when play ceased on Tuesday evening the former was still in with 61 to his credit. On Wednesday morning he continued hitting until he had run up 95, and though the other batsmen did not materially assist the score, Yorkshire were set 252 to win. They did not commence over brilliantly, and when four wickets were down for 84, the county’s prospect were not brilliant. Hawke and Mounsey did well, but the re mainder of the tail did not do much, and Oxford won by 54 runs, a very creditable victory. Score and analysis:— O xford U niversity . Mr. P. F.
