Cricket 1895

162 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 30, 1895. comes to replace Jarvis, Hill will be one of the most likely candidates for the berth. Of course, the Australian cricketers are very proud of their youthful, but brilliant, comrade. Giffen was no doubt thoroughly sincere in his remark at the farewell dinner at Adelaide, when referring to Hill, he expressed the belief that he was a boy who would not spoil himself. Too often a rising reputation is wrecked on rocks which hardly rise above the surface, and are guessedat only by those who regret a promise unfulfilled. The Nestor of Australian cricket is a man accustomed to speakby the book, and his con fidence in the Benjamin of the team, as the papers down under love to call Clem Hill, encourage usin the hope that, like the oldworld bearer of the title, the portion of Benjamin -may indeed far surpass that of his brethren. For it is seldom that so youthful a player finds himself called upon to facc bowlers of - the type of Peel, Briggs, and Richardson, and that he should have been able to defy their efforts for several hours, and meanwhile to play their bowling in a masterly and grace ful style, shows Clem Hill to stand alone amongst Australian novices in first-class cricket, and with but few compeers amongst Englishmen. His big innings of 150 offered no chance until 122 had been scored, and no mis-hit or flaw disfigured the good play, con taining a great variety of strokes, and characterized by patience and confidence befitting a veteran player, with which he had put together that fine total. The life then given him, allowed him to add an additional 28 runs, and to remain not out at the end*of the innings. In the second attempt of South Australia, he again was top scorer for his side, and comrades and opponents alike united in the applause which greeted him on his retire ment. Like applause will welcome him when he appears in England, as it is hoped will certainly be arranged when the next Aus tralian invasion occurs, for of all the new cricket stars of the Southern hemisphere, and they are by no means very few or wanting in brilliancy, there is none whose rise to the zenith of fame and fortune will be watched with greater interest and admiration by the followers of the game in this country, than the young South Australian whose counterfeit presentment accompanies this somewhat cursory sketch.
