The abstract and brief chronicle of the time.— Hamlet. M it c h a m : cricket is considerably tbe poorer by the withdrawal of W. W. Thomson, not only from the village but from all connection with the local club. Knowing as I do how thoroughly he has devoted himself to the development of the noble game at Mitcham for very many years, I am afraid there must be good reasons for his entire severance from work, which had been to him a labour of love so long. Richardson’s introduction to the county club was one of the many good offices W.W. has done to Surrey cricket. M e n t io n of Richardson reminds me that I was a little too previous in marry ing Surrey’s fast bowler. It really was a judgment on me for once—note the modesty !—giving publicity to second hand information. Still, after all, I was only anticipating events. Richardson’s marriage is in posse not in esse. And now you have a clean breast of it. A w eek or two ago I had occasion to mention incidentally the resignation by Mr. J. Portus of the office of hon. sec. of tbe New South Wales, which he had held for several years. The appointment of a paid secretary resulted in the election of Percy Bowden, out of thirteen candidales. The new secretary, it will be of interest to Cricket readers to know, is a brother of the late M. P. Bowden, who did such good service to Surrey for several years.
