Cricket 1895

May ' 2 o , 1800. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 151 GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. SOMERSET. For their first match of the season, com menced at Bristol on Thursday last, these neighbouring western counties had fairly representative teams, though E. M. Grace stood out and V. T. Hill was not available. Murch after all had not deserted that county for Wiltshire. This was very fortunate for the old county, as he took twelve Somerset shire wickets during the match, as the score shows. Somerset made a brilliant start, Fowler and Lionel Palairet, who playing admirable cricket after a quiet start, putting on runs rapidly. Fowler was missed when he had made 28, but gave no further chance. At last Palairet was caught at short leg at the third attempt for 80. Fowler soon followed, having made 118 out of 209, andhis first hun dred for the county. It was a fine display of good hitting all round the wicket, and including seventeen 4’s, three 3’s, and eight 2’s, made in two hours and twenty minutes. The scoring slowed down very much, and although 96 runs were added they occupied 135 minutes, almost the same period asthe first 209. In this innings, Board disposed of half the batsmen, catching four and stumping one. Gloucestershire lost two wickets for 15 runs, but Grace and Townsend played capital cricket, and added 43 more before stumps were drawn on Thursday night. Following up this commencement on Friday, the young amateur was not disposed of until within five of his hundred. “ The Master,” however, was in his very best form, playing his biggest innings since 1876, the annus mirabilis of this remarkable cricketer. He gave no actual chance in his magnificent innings of 288, scored in 320 minutes, and including thirty- eight 4’s, eleven 3’s, twenty-nine 2’s, and no more than forty-five singles. This wonderful innings certainly brings Dr. Grace’s record to a century of centuries, an achievement far exceeding anything recorded, probably twice as many as any other man has scored in first- classcricket. He hit, too, with all hisold skill and vigour, and it is worthy of remark, con- sideiing that he is now approaching the com pletion of his forty-seventh year, that this is his third best score in a long career extend ing over twenty-one years. The rest of the side did comparatively little, but still Somer set were left 171 to the bad on the first hands. In the follow on, Fowler and Stanley of whom the latter played a strong defensive game in each innings made 45with out loss before stumps were drawn. On Saturday, however, the side failed before the bowling of Murch, and though at lunch time 160 were scored for five wickets, the rest added but 29, and Gloucestershire had no difficulty in winning their first county match of the season, with nine wickets to spare. Murch, as will be seen, took eight wickets for 68 runs. Score and analysis:— S omerset . Second Innings. First Innings. ?> H. Palairet, c Braoher, b R oberts...........80 G.
