Cricket 1895
146 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 23. 1895. think, are my best strokes, and most prolific in run getting.” ‘ ‘ Has the style of batting changed much during the past 25 years?” “ Yes, I think so. The positions of the men in the field are entirely altered owing to the 1 off ’ theory of bowling being so largely practised. Long ago bowlers aimed for the stumps, and a few balls were pitched to leg, with the result that one could send a good many hits to the ‘ on ’ side of the field.” “ Who were some of the best batsmen when you first entered Surrey County cricket ? ’ 9 “ Amongst them were Jupp, Humphrey, and Messrs. W. H. Game, G. Strachan, A, P. Lucas, J, Shuter, and S. H. Ackroyd.” “ Which do you consider the most perfect innings you have played P’ ’ “ I should say the 117 for England v. Australia at the Oval in 1884, and 247 for for Surrey v. Lancashire in 1887. I doubt whether I ever played better cricket than on those two occasions.” “ What was the most exciting match in which you have taken part ? ” ‘ ‘ Ah ! that was in the famous tie match at the Oval last season, when Surrey and Lancashire made a dead heat. The excite ment during the last few minutes of the game, and especially while the last few balls were sent down was simply wonderful.” “ I suppose you have also seen some humorous incidents on the cricket field. Can you recall one ? ” “ W ell! I remember one incident that was both humorous and exciting. It occurred when I was one of Mr. Vernon’s Australian team. We were playing at Latiobe in New South Wales, when a small snake suddendly made its appearance out of a hole in the ground. I believe Rawlin who now plays for Middlesex was fielding close by, but he did not wait to make its acquaintance.” “ By the way, do you ever feel nervous on going in to bat? ” “ No ! not now. I did in my first county match in 1873, and also in the first England match v. Australia. One might however be excused a little ‘ stage fright ’ on those occasions.” “ I suppose like other batsmen you have sometimes had wrong decisions given against you—giving you out when you ought to have been in, and giving you in when you ought to have been out ? Do you think on the whole that you have suffered by the mistakes of the umpires? ” “ I should just like to say that umpires make very few mistakes, and I am sure that when they do so it is unavoidable. So far as I am concerned the right and the wrong decifions just about balance each other. If I am given out by mistake to-day, I may be allowed to keep my wicket to-morrow when I am really out.” ‘ ‘ Have you ever made a century in each innings ?” “ Not in what is known as first-class cricket, though I once knocked up a hundred each time for the Gentlemen of Surrey v. Philadelphians at the Oval.” “ Have you ever done anything with the ball?” “ W ell! at Scarborough in a North v. South match, I was fortunate enough to do the ‘ hat trick’ when I dismissed Dr. Dixon, Gunn and Barnes with successive ‘ lobs.’ ” In order to show Mr. Read’s usefulness to Surrey cricket, it may be mentioned that out of. 141 centuries scored by Surrey, W.W. chums the large proportion of 36. Four times he has made over 200 in one innings, and on one occasion for Surrey v. Oxford University in, 1888, he knocked up 338 or only six runs less than W. G. Grace’s record score. As an evidence that Mr. Read’s hand has not lost its cunning, and that his natural force has not abated, one might instance his splendid innings of 161againstYorkshire atthe Oval last year. This seasonMr. Read has com menced in excellent style, and though he is by far the oldest of present day Surrey cricketers, he is is still one of the most active and one of the most successful. His record is by no means closed yet—but, supposing eventhat he were now to rest on his laurels, his name would go down to posterity as one of the greatest batsmen the world has produced.
