Cricket 1895
138 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 16, 1895. Cambridge, on Wednesday and Thursday of last week, 135 in the first and 137 not out of a total of 224 for two wickets in the second innings. The feat may be of some use to him in University cricket, especially as he has made his mark this week in a higher class of fixture with two creditable scores for Somersetshire, his county against Cambridge University. W h a t with Ranjitsinhji’s 150 at Lords on Saturday, Carpenter’s 145, and P. Mitchell’s 191 on Monday, Abel’s 217 and Holland’s 123 on Tuesday, H. W. Bainbridge’s 104 not out, and S. M. J. Wood’s 180 yesterday, the bowlers every where have had some reason to remember the rare experience for the first fortnight of the season of abnormally fast wickets. In most of the cases named too the score named was the best on record for the several batsmen. Y e t the most notable of all, perhaps, was that of the Surrey youngster Holland. Indeed, it is open to ques tion whether there has ever been a better commencement of a career for a young professional, omitting his score of 31 not out for Surrey against the South Africans, his only appearances so far in first-class cricket, have been in the two matches against Essex. At the end of last year, as will be remembered, he made 76 at Leyton, so that adding his score of 123 on Tuesday at the Oval, he has scored 199 in his first two important matches. Holland, who, I may add, is Surrey born and bred, only completed his nineteenth year in February. I t is quite useless to institute com parisons between Dr. W. G. Grace and any other cricketer. Like Cleopatra he is unwithered by age and no amount of custom can stale the infinite variety of his triumphs. The great batsman’s latest century was equal in style, and even in rate of scoring, to many of those he scored a quarter of a century ago. His innings lasted 105 minutes, he scored 103 runs. In the first 40 minutes he had scored 20 runs, but the following 30 runs occupied 25 minutes only. The second 50 were notched in 35 minutes, the century therefore being registered in exactly 100 minutes. For any other man rapidly approaching his forty-eighth birthday, this would be held to be a phenomenal performance, but no achieve ment of W. G .’s can occasion more than a passing surprise.
